INNER BEARING RACE REMOVER

This invention relates to a means to remove an inner race from a spindle, axle, shaft, or the like (hereinafter referred to simply as a'spindle') to which it has been friction secured. A race comprises an inner bearing race, namely a circumferential groove on an inner spindle, and an outer bearing race, namely a circumferential groove on the outer spindle or mechanism, between which bearing races, when aligned to form a passageway, a series of bearings, for example ball bearings, are positioned. Through use, the ball bearings and grooves wear and ball bearings fall out of the passageway. After one ball bearing is lost from the race, the rest of the bearings start to disintegrate and eventually the race separates. This means that the inner race requires to be removed for a new race to be fitted.

A problem is that access to the inner race on the spindle is restricted such that removal of the inner race is difficult.

An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate the problem.

Accordingly, the present invention is means to remove an inner race on a spindle comprising a sleeve having at one end means with which a pulling device can be engaged and at its other end an inwardly projecting annular lip whose inner face is grooved along its length to serve as an outer race, a bore being provided in the lip and through the lip to the outer race whereby with the outer race aligned with the inner race and a series of ball bearings fed into the passageway through the bore, the inner race can be removed due to the provision of a grip between the inner bearing race on

the spindle and the outer bearing race on the sleeve and a pulling device being engaged with the means and an axial force provided.

An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a vertical crosssection of a sleeve of means to remove an inner bearing race from a spindle according to the present invention.

Referring to the drawing, means to remove an inner bearing race from a spindle comprises a sleeve 10 having at one end means, in the form of an outwardly projecting flange 12 with which a pulling device (not shown) can be engaged and at its other end an inwardly projecting annular lip 14. The inner face 16 of the lip 14 is grooved along its length to serve as an outer race. A bore 18 is provided in the lip 14 and through the lip 14 to the outer race.

With the outer race aligned with the inner race to form a passageway and a series of ball bearings (not shown) fed into the passageway through the bore 18, and if necessary, the bore 18 plugged, the inner race (not shown) can be removed due to the provision of a grip between the inner bearing race on the spindle and the outer bearing race on the sleeve and a pulling device being engaged with the means and an axial force provided.

If necessary, a dual sleeve can be provided one on each side of the flange 12, the difference between the two sleeves being the diameters. This will allow the use of the one removal means to fit inner races of different diameters.

Variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above.

Claims

CLAIMS 1. An Inner Bearing Race Remover is a tool used to withdraw an inner bearing race from a shaft or spindle to which it has been diction secured.
2. A remover as claimed in (1). Is a sleeve having at one end a collar to which a pulling device can be engaged.
3 A remover as claimed in (2). with a collar at one end and at its other end an inwardly projecting annular lip who's inner face is grooved all the way round to serve as the outer race.
4. A remover as claimed in (3), has an opening in the groove (outer race) into which ball bearings can be inserted.
5. A remover as claimed in (4), when the groove on the inner race is aligned with the groove on the outer race (tool) the ball bearings when inserted will be trapped between the grooves providing a circular grip.
6. A remover as claimed in (5), when the pulling device is applied and axial force is engaged between the spindle and the tool thus removing the inner race.
7. The Inner Bearing Race Remover is manufactured from mild steel and can be case-hardned for durability.
