Abstract

The base is made from polyethylene and comprises a means upon which a crab or lobster pot can be built. The base may be oblong and have a lattice construction. There may be provided on the base six anchor points 12 into which a length of plastic rod is located. The rod is positioned in opposing holders 12 and forms a semi-circular shape. The rods may support netting.

POLYETHYLENE CRAB/LOBSTER POT BASE The invention relates to a base only upon which a crab or lobster pot or cage is built.
Such bases are well known but are built of either wood, which is attractive to burrowing marine worms resulting in the eventual destruction of the base or it is built of metal which corrodes at an accelerated rate when immersed in sea water. Either construction is a wasteful use of resources and neccessitates renewal on a regular basis.
The object of this invention is that the base is made entirely of a
14 substance known as polyethylene which has an exceedingly long life, is unaffected by immersion in sea water, requires minimal maintenance and affords attachment of ropes and weights. The base, instead of being solid is latticed, which combines strength with rigidity and an economical use of the material than is possible by use of otherconstruction methods.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : FIGURE 1 shows a plan view of the base FIGURE 2 shows the side elevation of the base As shown in figure 1, the base is comprised of a lattice work, oblong in shape 10 having at each corner, and halfway along each of the longest sides, a postholder 12 each being slightly raised above the floor of the
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
A lobster or crab pot is a trap which is baited and attached, by means of a rope, to other such pots forming a line of perhaps 80 pots and called a FLEET.
The fleet is lowered to the seabed as the vessel moves slowly ahead and are retrieved at a later date.
Whilst on the se bed the bait within the pot attracts crabs and lobsters and are able to enter the pot but unable to leave by virtue if its construction.
The base of the pot 10 affords six post holders 12. Each post holder allows a length of plastic rod to be inserted which is bent into a semi-circle and inserted into the hole opposite. The three semi-circular hoops support netting into which entry holes are formed allowing the entry of the crustacians.

Claims (3)

1 A polyethylene base providing a means upon which a crab/lobster pot can be built.
2 A polyethylene base as claimed in 1 wherin six post holders are located . affording anchor points for further attachments by means of which the rest of the crab/lobster pot can be built.
3 A polyethylene base as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 constructed in such a manner as to afford the attachment of ropes and weights.
