Abstract

A trailed powered agricultural/forestry implement, eg a fertilizer spreader, is connected to a tractor via a reciprocating draw-bar 8 and has wheels coupled to axles which are driven by a differential 4. A power-take-off shaft transmits power from the tractor to the differential 4 which is purposely allowed to slip so that motion is transferred to an oil pump 7 that performs as a brake when resistence in an oil flow circuit 9 is increased by a hydraulic valve operated by push/pull forces exerted upon reciprocating draw-bar 8. Due to the braking effect the once slipping differential 4 transmits a proportioned amount of power to prop shaft 2 and, via the axles, rotates the wheels. This arrangement eliminates jack knife under cornering since wheel speeds between trailer and tractor are matched and it may be used with any type of tractor. Drive between prop shaft 2 and differential 4 may be disconnected by a clutch mechanism 5.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Description Variable speed P. T. O driven axle (s).
This invention relates to trailed agricultural equipment such as fertilizer spreaders, trailers etc, which incorporate power driven axles (s) to increase traction and minimize damage to soil or crops.
One drawback with the currently available equipment is that one machine is usually paired with one particular tractor as the gear ratio between the two is critical. This reduces tractor choice and ability to use oversized tyre's as the increased rolling radius will most definitely result in a change to a once paired wheel speeds.
The other drawback is jack-knifing. This will occur as a result of sharp turns, due to the angle of the draw-bar and its forward pushing force.
This invention overcomes these problems by using a variable speed type transmission with-in the implement. This allows any wheel speeds to be matched to that of the tractor with-in the P. T. O. shaft's maximum revolutions per minute, (eg 0-10 mph max). This makes tractor and alternative wheel sizes to be chosen with ease.
The risk of jack-knife is eliminated due to its ability copy wheel speeds while controlling amount of forward driving force required.
Essential features Huge increase in traction/less damage to soil and crops.
Ability to turn sharp safe from jack-knife.
Useable with any tractor.
Enabling use of smaller tractors that usually lack both ballast and traction.

Description to accompany drawing) FIG 1 shows a plan view of draw-bar, transmission, prop-shaft and axle/wheels assembly.
The current invention (FIG 1) shows an axle/draw-bar configuration found in that of agriculture or forestry with the addition of a p. to driven variable speed transmission and drive to wheels.
The tractor power take-off shaft 1 is connected to the input shaft 6, by means of a quick release power drive shaft (not shown). This rotates a differential 4 found within the transmission case 3 The rotating differential 4 is purposely allowed to slip transferring all motion into an adjacently connected oil pump 7. This performs as a brake due to a result of increasing resistance to the oil flow 9 by means of a hydraulic valve, operated by push/pull force exerted upon the reciprocating draw-bar 8. Due to the characteristics of the differential 4, any speed decrease in the oil pump 7 is automatically diverted to the driving axle 10 via the prop shaft 2. Drive between prop shaft 2 and transmission 3 can be disconnected for road use by means of a simple clutch mechanism 5.
