Abstract
An access cover frame and cover assembly comprises an upstanding frame portion 10, defining an opening for receiving an access cover 15. The frame consists of a first horizontal flange 11 which extends outwardly from the upstanding portion, and a plurality of second flanges 12 which extend inwardly from the upstanding frame portion. The access cover rests on seating elements which are secured or integral with the upstanding frame portion 10 and the second horizontal flanges 12. The frame may also comprise a plurality of narrower third horizontal flanges connecting the second flanges, extending inwards from the upstanding portion, both second and third flanges helping to stabilise the frame by preventing rotation and damaging the setting material. The upstanding frame may also be reinforced at the corners adjacent to the seating elements. The cover may comprise several pieces which may be triangular in shape, and the whole assembly, cover and frame, is manufactured by casting.

IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO
ACCESS COVERS
This invention relates to an access cover frame and to an access cover in combination with such a frame.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided an access cover frame comprising an annular upstanding frame portion defining an opening for receiving an access cover, a first annular or substantially annular horizontal flange extending outwardly from the upstanding frame portion, a plurality of second horizontal flanges extending inwards from the upstanding frame portion and a plurality of seat elements for supporting the access cover, the seat elements being secured to or integral with the upstanding frame portion and the second flanges.
Preferably, each second flange is symmetrical with respect to a respective seat element.
Preferably, the access cover frame further comprises a plurality of third horizontal flanges extending inwards from the upstanding frame portion, the third flanges extending respectively between adjacent pairs of second flanges and being of smaller width than the second flanges.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Preferably, the access cover frame has been formed by casting.
In one embodiment, the upstanding frame portion is extended outwards over the first flange at locations adjacent to the seat elements.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided an access cover frame according to the first aspect of the invention in combination with an access cover.
Preferably, the access cover comprises a plurality of cover parts which may be of triangular shape.
Preferably, the access cover has also been formed by casting.
The invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of an access cover frame according to the first aspect of the present invention in combination with an access cover, Figure 2 is a plan view of the frame shown in Figure 1,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line III-III of Figure 2, Figure 4 is a section taken along the line IV-IV of Figure 2, Figure 5 is a section taken along the line V-V of Figure 2, and Figure 6 is a plan view of a second embodiment of an access cover frame according to the first aspect of the present invention in combination with an access cover.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 to 5, the access cover frame shown therein comprises an annular upstanding frame portion 10 of generally rectangular configuration, a first annular horizontal flange 11 extending outwardly from the upstanding frame portion 10, a plurality of second horizontal flanges 12 extending inwards from the upstanding frame portion 10 and a plurality of third horizontal flanges 13 extending inwards from the upstanding frame portion 10.
The frame is formed from a casting operation and the frame portion 10 and first, second and third flanges 11, 12 and 13 are formed integrally with one another.
The third flanges 13 extend respectively between adjacent pairs of second flanges 12 and are of smaller width than the second flanges.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
The access cover frame also comprises a plurality of seat elements 14 for supporting the access cover 15 (shown in Figure 1). The seat elements 14 are integral with the upstanding frame portion 10 and with respective second flanges 12.
As shown, there are six such seat elements 14 and a corresponding number of second flanges 12. Four of the seat elements 14 are at respective corners of the frame and two are located midway along the longer sides of the frame. The second flanges
12 are each symmetrical with respect to the respective seat elements 14. That is to say, the second flanges 12 extend in two directions away from each seat element 14 by equal distances.
The upstanding frame portion 10 also has four prising recesses 16 to enable the cover to be removed from the frame.
As shown in Figure 1, the cover 15 is made up of four triangular parts 15a, 15b, 15c and 15d. The cover 15 fits within the upstanding frame portion 10 and is supported on the seat elements 14.
Reinforcing ribs 17 are provided between the upstanding frame portion 10 and the horizontal flange 11.
The provision of the second flanges 12 spreads the downwards pressure at the
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
comers of the frame. This reduces rotation of the frame and should, therefore, reduce the risk of premature mortar failure.
The differential in the width of the second and third flanges 12 and 13 results in the comers of the frame being stiffer than the sides and this increases the torsional stiffness differential between the seating areas (where the seat elements 14 are located) and the other areas of the frame.
The provision of the third flanges 13, in addition to the second flanges 12 allows grouting to take place on both sides of the upstanding frame portion 10.
The second and third flanges 12 and 13 respectively reduce the turning moment of the frame when bedded in concrete or other settable material and the smaller width of the third flanges relative to the second flanges avoids the use of unnecessary material where it is not required.
The frame shown in Figure 6 differs from that shown in Figures 1 to 5 in that the upstanding flange portion 10'is recessed outwards over the horizontal flange 11'at locations adjacent to the seat elements 14'. The cover 15'is again made up of four substantially triangular parts but shaped to fit within the modified shape of the upstanding frame portion 10'.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Extending the upstanding frame portion 10'outwards over the first flange 11. at locations adjacent to the seat elements 14'increases the rigidity of the frame in the seating areas.
The embodiments described above are given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. For example, the upstanding frame portion could be of generally square configuration and have a single cover or a cover made up of two triangular parts. The cover could also include more than four triangular parts.
