Abstract

Resuscitation apparatus includes a T-shaped connecting tube 2 attached to a nebuliser 3. The tube 2 is connected to a breathing bag 7 or ventilator. Tube 2 is also connected to a catheter 1 which delivers the nebulised solution to the patient via a mask 8 or an endotracheal tube. Oxygen 6 is delivered to both the breathing bag 7 and nebuliser 3. In use, the breathing bag 7 or ventilator forces the nebulised solution to the patient. It may be used where natural inhalation proves difficult for example during asthma attacks. The apparatus can be removed easily if normal breathing is restored and has movable parts to suit changing circumstances. It may be made of plastic, auto-clavable rubber or stainless steel.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Nebulised Resuscitation This invention is for the administration of nebulised drugs in solution, under positive pressure ventilation with the use of a Bag & Mask or with an automated ventilator connected to either a mask or a cuffed endotracheal tube (a tube that is inserted into the trachea that totally secures an airway) to deliver drugs in an atomized way using hollow tubing, oxygen and a nebuliser, throughout the Lungs/Alveoli.
The invention will have a positive effect on the treatment and outcome for patients suffering various life threatening conditions, such as Asthma, Anaphylaxsis Respiratory and Cardiac Arrest, it could help to save lives.
The invention will be of value to patients in the Pre-hospital care setting i. e. in the Home or Ambulance, but can also be of benefit in Accident and Emergency departments, by suitably trained staff.
I thought of this invention after having a number of patients go into respiratory arrest following acute severe asthma attacks (which resulted in them dying) in Asthma the patient can have reduced respiratory function and is unable to breathe in the vital bronchial dilator drug"Salbutamol"that we as Paramedics administer, nebulised with oxygen. This gave me the idea of joining up 3 pieces of individual equipment.
A"Catheter mount", a"Nebuliser"and a"Bag & Mask". each of which have never been previously connected together in this way.
This invention can also be used to treat the collapsed person suffering from another life threatening condition called Anaphylaxia (a severe allergic reaction) in which they
can have severe acute respiratory failure, being able to "force" nebulised "Sabutam01" or"Adrenaline"down into their Lungs/alveoli could help to Save their Life.
The other aspect of this invention is during a Cardiac Arrest situation if a Paramedic or Anaesthetist cannot cannulate (get intravenous access) then we would normally inject/pore up to a total of 60mls of sterile water solution with 6mg of the drug i. e."adrenaline", straight down the Endotraceal tube into the lungs. using my invention you would get a larger effect, by nebulising the drugs under positive pressure ventilation, dispersing them in a fine mist with oxygen throughout the whole of the lung tissue/alveoli, thus needing less drug for maximum effect.
My invention could also be incorporated into The Resuscitation Protocol, nebulising Cardiac drugs whilst also giving them intravenously (Adrenaline) hightening their effect.
My invention will be packaged in a"ready to go"state so that when people are carrying out a resuscitation, it can be easily setup and used as quickly as possible.
My invention is a simple piece of kit, with life saving capabilities.
All the parts except the Bag & Mask are made of disposable (single use) plastic, but could be also be made of auto-clavable Stainless steel and rubber.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The invention will now be described by way of the following text that relates to the drawings enclosed.
Drawing page 1/2 ; Fig. l 3D perspective.
Shows the Catheter mount tube (1) that comprises of a 90 degree angled hollow tube that offers tubular attachment at one end for a Face Mask or Endotracheal tube (either pushed into the accommodating hole on the Face Mask, or over an Endotracheal tube) above this is a plug that has a safety lead, if you take out this plug you can pour drugs straight into the Lungs.
In the centre is a plastic corrugated section that gives the catheter tube flexibility. at the other end is a solid connection that is used normally for a Bag (7) or automatic ventilator but I have replaced this with the hollow T-piece tube (2), this has a hole that can accommodate the Bag (page 2/2 Fig. 3 (7) this T-piece has tubular connection into the nebuliser (3) and the catheter mount (1) Drawing page 1/2: Fig. 2 This shows a side on elevation and shows both Catheter mount (1) and T-piece tube with nebuliser (2) & (3) joined up, note that I have introduced oxygen tubing (6) that is atomizing the drug in solution (4) mixing both oxygen and drug together.
This is seen as a mist (5) to come out of the catheter mount and into the lungs.
Drawing page 2/2 Fig. 3 3D perspective.
This show how all the main parts come together firstly connect the plastic T-piece tube (2) with the nebuliser that contains the drug of choice in solution (3) attach this to the Catheter mount (1) as Fig. 2 page 1/2. Push the 90 degree section that has the drug port/plug on top onto either an endotracheal tube (not shown) or the Face Mask (8) Connect the automatic ventilator (not shown) or the Bag (7) to the end of the T-piece (2) Drawing page 2/2 Fig. 4 3D perspective.
This shows all of the invention and various parts in action.
Oxygen via a tube (6) is fed into the Nebuliser at 6-8 Ltr per min which atomises the drug in solution, this is the forced into the lungs with positive pressure using a Bag (7) and Face Mask (8) or an automatic ventilator with attachment to either a mask (8) or an endotracheal (tube not shown). Once all assembled and drugs ready to be delivered, by squeezing the Bag (7) or using an automatic ventilator a mist of oxygen and drugs come through the tubes (3) (2) & (1) into the Face Mask (8) and into the lungs.
You can see how the Bag (7) fits onto the T-piece (2) note that 100% oxygen (6) feeds into the Bag (7) with an oxygen reservoir Bag (9) as standard.
Once setup up a variety of life saving drugs can be administered in this way.

Claims (5)

  1. What I claim is: 1. A set of tubes that by way of positive pressure ventilation, using medical oxygen and a container that is able to atomize a drug in solution (nebuliser) to form a mist that can forced into the lungs with the aid of of a Bag & Mask or automatic ventilator, should a patient be compromised enough to warrant it.
    A patient with following conditions could find it a benefit: Asthmatics, Anaphylaxis, Respiratory & Cardiac arrest.
  2. 2. Nebulising certain drugs in solution as claimed in claim 1 may contribute to a positive patient outcome, if there is a recovery then the nebuliser can easily be removed and traditional airway maintenance can be restored.
  3. 3. Nebulising certain drugs in solution as claimed in claim 2 and using disposable plastics will help to aid in a succesful patient recovery, keeping on top of possible post resuscitation infections.
  4. 4. Nebulising certain drugs in solution as claimed in claim 3 the various plastic parts may also be made of auto-clavable Rubber or Stainless steel.
  5. 5. Nebulising certain drugs in solution as claimed in claim 2 and by having moveable parts as claimed in claim 1 means you can alter each section to meet a changing situation.
