Abstract

A system for towing swimmers or surfers out to sea, comprising a continuous looped tow rope 1, anchored by a pulley on the sea bed and a buoy at the surface, and driven by a motor (4 fig 1). The system may be remotely controlled by a swimmer.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
DESCRIPTION A system for towing swimmers through waves This invention relates to devices for positioning swimmers, and particularly surfers, outside the breaking waves on the shoreline.
Surfers know that much of their energy in pursuing their sport is spent in swimming through breaking waves in order to position themselves outside the breaking waves on the shoreline (in the "line-up") to catch a ride.
The object of this invention is to provide a means for surfers and other users of the sea (lifeguards, divers, windsurfers etc) to get to outside the area of breaking waves without expending great quantities of effort.
Accordingly, this invention comprises a towing device-an engine or motoron the shore connected to an offshore anchor and pulley points by a line providing a mechanised tow through the waves.
Preferably, the towing device is powered by electricity (for example, a car or other portable battery) or a small petrol or diesel engine.
Preferably, the towing device is operable remotely, so it only runs when
required to pull the users through the waves. The user would carry a small radio transmitter, similar to a remote control for a garage door or parking I gate, to operate the towing device as required.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
If necessary, the towing device is treated with sound-deadening material to ensure minimum interference with enjoyment of the natural environment so important to the likely constituency of users.
The invention is be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
FIGURES Figure 1 is a schematic elevation of the towing engine and its fastenings on the shore. The onshore components of the system comprise the tow rope (1) and the towing device (4) - a small engine or electrical motor anchored into the beach by pegs and line (5).
Figure 2 shows the offshore components of the system, comprising a pulley attached to a buoy (2) which is in turn attached to an anchor (3). Another pulley is attached to the anchor and remains on the seabed.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS A system for towing swimmers and surfers outside the breaking waves on the shoreline.
    A system comprising a towing device and pulleys and anchors connected by a continuous looped tow-rope.
    A system with a continuous looped tow-rope strung with one end in shallow water or on shore and one end in deeper water.
    A system with a towing device positioned on the shore, anchored with pegs and lines as necessary, powered by a small engine or motor and fitted with sound deadening equipment.
    A system with an anchor and pulleys positioned offshore to permit the towing of swimmers out through the breaking waves.
    A system with remote operability, such that the user can run the towing device only when required.
