Abstract
A security nut has a nut body (5) with a rotatable captive washer (1) and a rotatable captive outer sleeve (2). The nut includes an internally splined driving formation (13) for engagement with a key/tool (6) having a corresponding formation (7). The key/tool (6) may be retained on the nut to provide a quick release arrangement e.g. for a bicycle wheel.

Locking nut
This nut assembly is designed to replace an original nut that retains any component, for example a component such as a bicycle wheel retained to the bicycle forks, to provide a secure anti-theft device or alternatively a quick release mechanism.
This locking nut prevents unauthorised removal of such components, unless access to the key is granted.
This invention provides a direct replacement for non-secure standard fastenings such as a hexagonal nut.
This invention provides a more secure fastening than the standard nut or fastening that it replaces, and so preventing unauthorised removal of the component being retained by the fastening.
The locknut is preferably made of aluminium with a hard steel or stainless steel outer sleeve & washer.
The key and dust cap may also be aluminium with an anodised finish, although any other suitable materials may be used to suit particular applications on both nut body & key.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the retained/rotating washer Figure 2 shows the hard/rotating outer sleeve Figure 3 shows the dust cap Figure 4 shows the dust cap sealing washer Figure 5 shows the main nut body one end internally threaded the other splined Figure 6 shows the complete nut assembly Figures 7 & 8 show the key externally splined to match the nut with recess for retaining the thumbscrew 10.
Figure 9 shows the knurled thumbscrew Figure 10 shows the thumbscrew retaining clip Figure 11 shows the thumbscrew washer Figure 12 shows the complete key assembly

Locking nut As shown in figure 6 the nut comprises of a main internally threaded body. The thread one end the same size and thread form as the nut it is to replace. The other end is threaded to accomodate the dust cap 3.
The body is also internally splined, these splines may be of a random design and so unique to each nut Fig 6 and key Fig 12, or to every batch produced.
A captive but rotateable washer is positioned at the main threaded end and a hard rotating sleeve is retained around the outside of the body.
The key Fig. 12 comprises of a handle for leverage with a hole for fixing to a key ring etc. a splined protrusion matches the splines in the body of the nut & a thumb screw is used to retain the key to the nut.
A dust cap 3 is provided that can screw into the end of the nut or the thumbscrew 10 when the key is in place on the nut.
Claims (10)
1. A security device consisting of a locking nut and key with dust cap assembly, the nut having a rotatable washer & hard outer sleeve that are captive on the body of the nut so as not to allow turning of the nut body without using the key, where the key may be retained and the whole assembly may be replace an existing non-secure fastening.
2. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in claim 1 having a random internal spline in one end of the nut or nuts that can only be turned when mated with the matching key or keys.
3. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 having a random external spline on the key or keys which can only be mated with and turn the nut or nuts to which it/they are matched.
4. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in any preceding claim the key having an internal screw thread at the opposite end to the external splines to facilitate fixing of the dust cap.
5. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in any preceding claim the nut body having an internal screw thread at the opposite end to the internal splines to facilitate fixing to a threaded spindle or bolt.
6. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in any preceding claim the nut body having an internal screw thread at the same end to the internal splines to facilitate fixing of the dust cap.
7. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in any preceding claim where the thumbscrew is retained in the key by means of a spring clip, or other suitable device.
8. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in any preceding claim where a dust cap may be retained in the end of the nut or key by means of a screw thread.
9. A nut, key and dust cap as claimed in any preceeding claim the nut, key and/or dust cap being made of aluminium, steel and stainless steel or any other suitable material as required or appropriate to its construction and use.
10. A nut, key and dust cap substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
