Abstract

A device for the application of nail varnish to finger nails or toe nails, in which the cosmetic is expelled by presure from the in built reservoir through an applicator. The device is in the form of a slim pen-like structure with the tube shaped body made of plastic and possibly transparent. The pressure in the device is created by the twisting action of a cap at the end opposite to that of the applicator. The applicator may be in the form of a bristle brush, a foam sponge pad or a fibre nib. The device may have a removable plastic top.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Nail Polish Applicator The invention relates to the application of nail polish to a set of finger nails and toe nails. The invention adds colour and strength to the nail with precision and ease.
Nail polish bottles are well known and indeed used by many, but the bottles cause many problems to the user.
Problems-Brushes bristles which apply the polish to the nail usually suffer as the polish solution usually binds the bristles together.
The brushes themselves are quite long and flexible therefore application is not precise as the bristles tend to bend.
The length of the brush and handle does not give the user much control when applying.
The polish solution often bulges at the end of the brush causing a messing application and spillage's onto the nail.
Brushes normally do not reach to the bottom of the bottle and the user has to tip the bottle to one side to get enough on the brush tip, this can cause spillage of the solution.
Nail polish is normally past its best after a few applications. Before the user even reaches half way down the bottle the solution becomes gluey and difficult to apply.
The rim of the bottle can also become crystallised and when the polish is applied these tiny pieces of crusted polish get stuck into the nail surface. Regular cleaning of the top of the bottle is essential.
Expensive nail polishes are no exception and the public are simply not getting there moneys worth.
Storage of nail polishes can be a problem, the bottles are often big and bulky and the user tends to keep even the oldest polishes as they may be useful one day (even though they are set in the bottle).
The object of the znvention IS to provlde a nallpolish pen applicator whlch can apply nail polish with ease and precIsion to the nail and save the user a messy application or a trip to the nazl salon by getting a professional polished look to the nail. The product can only be usedfor afew applications and then it can be disposed of, to elimmate the above problems of storage and unusable polish.

Preferably the pen will be made of plastic (as to be as light as possible) and quite slim and slightly less lengthy than a bic biro, yet slightly thicker. The bristles should be short and quite thick and once the pressure of the bristles is set to the nail the polish will distribute according to the users pressure. Another way to distribute the polish could be a twist function at the top of the pen which would relieve the polish through the brush or foam nib. A felt tip applicator could also be a possibility if the polish solution will run through successfully. For all these suggestions a new polish formula may have to be designed to accommodate such an idea (but that would have to be researched at a later date).
See Design Sheet attached for figures 1,2 and 3. The invention will now be described in as much detail as possible. All drawings are sketch and measurements are to give an idea of sizes they are not compulsory. The tube of the pen design should be transparent so the user can determine the volume Figure 1-shows a side sketch of one idea of the pen. The nib is made of foam and quite rigid. When the ribbed top of the pen is turned the polish would be released and the foam nib can be used to apply a steady precise line around the cuticle. Following to fill in the centre of the nail. The ribbed top can then be turned to stop the polish and the user can move to the next nail.
Figure 2-shows a side sketch of one idea of the pen. This idea has a felt tip applicator nib. The polish runs through the tip of the pen and polish can be applied with ease. A problem could be polish may be too thick a solution for this idea to work.
Figure 3 - shows a side sketch of one idea of the pen. The bristles of the brush are quite stubby and rigid 0.5cm long. They angle out towards the end and once pressure is applied the pen distributes the polish through the centre of the brush onto the nail.
Once the user has enough polish they should release the pressure and the polish flow will stop. The user can spread the liquid around the nail to give a professional look.
All ideas are based on the pen design approximately 13cm long and 1 cm wide. This is what gives the user control to apply the polish with as much accuracy as possible.
Measurements may have to change as volume will have to cover an average persons set of nails and toes. The final designs may be a mix and match of ideas changing with a twist top mechanism or a pressure design to release the polish. All require a fitted snap-top lid to keep the moisture in the nib and stop the polish damaging other materials.
The pen should be plastic and the polish solution should travel down the shaft of the pen to a nib of either figure 1,2 or 3. Either dispensed by pressure or a two way valve the polish should be transferred onto the nail. The nib applicator of whichever design should guide the polish for a professional polish line around the cuticle. The centre can then be polished with the excess solution and the nail will be professionally covered with very little difficulty by the user.

This invention could save buyers huge amounts of money and give them a professional look on their hands and toe nails. The pens could be sold in packs of ten including base/topcoat (clear). The future of the design could result in a thicker pen which could take a larger volume and hold a customers favourite colour, instead of using the design as a throw away basis product.
