Abstract

A disposable container for two or more separate items of foodstuffs comprises a body having at least two separate compartments. Each compartment is closable by a cover which can be partially removed from the container to expose the contents of one compartment without exposing the contents of the other compartment(s) of the container. The container body includes one or more internal partitions (5) sealed to the side(s) and cover of the container body which divide the container interior into the two or more entirely separate compartments and the cover includes perforations (4) which overlie the container rim and the partitions (5) to divide the cover into separately removable segments (2a) - (2d).

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
DISPOSABLE CONTAINERS FOR FOODSTUFFS This invention relates to disposable containers for foodstuffs. The term "foodstuffs"includes, without limitation, all items of food, drink and confectionery. More especially the invention relates to disposable containers having two or more separate bowllike compartments for retaining two or more items of foodstuffs in a preserved and hygienic manner.
Plastics containers comprising two side-by-side bowl-like compartments including a foil cover are well known. In these containers the foil cover is common to both compartments which means that one compartment cannot be selectively opened without opening the other.
The present invention sets out to provide a sealed disposable container for two or more separate items of foodstuffs each of which can selectively be removed from the container without disrupting the seal provided for the other one or more items of foodstuff.
According to the present invention in one aspect, there is provided a disposable container for two or more separate items of foodstuffs, the container comprising a body having at least two separate compartments each closable by a cover which can be partially removed to expose the contents of one compartment of the container without exposing the other compartment (s) of the container, the container body including one or more internal partitions sealed to the side (s) and cover of the container body which divide the container interior into the separate compartments and each formed with an upper rim to which the cover is attached, the cover including tear lines of weakness which overlie the rim upper surfaces of the partitions to enable that part of the cover which seals one compartment to be removed without exposing the contents of the other compartment (s) of the container.
The tear lines are preferably lines of perforations.
The container is preferably produced from a plastics material.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The or each partition may extend across the full width of the container. The compartments may be of equal or different capacity.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which :-
Figure I is a plan view of a container in accordance with the invention ; and Figure 2 is a section taken along line II-II of Figure 1.
The container illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is bowl-shaped and comprises a plastics body 1 closed by a cover 2. The cover is formed integrally with the container body and provides an effective seal for the container interior to ensure that the contents of the container are hygienically preserved. The side edges of the cover are secured by any conventional means to a peripheral lip 3 of the container. The surface of the cover 2 is formed with a series of perforations 4.
The container interior is divided into four separate compartments 6 by partitions 5 which extend across the length and width of the container.
The partitions have generally flat and even upper surfaces or rims 7 to which the cover 3 is secured with the perforations 4 overlying the rim surfaces 7. Essentially, the perforations divide the cover 2 into four segments 2a to 2d each covering one of the compartments 6.
In use, the compartments are filled with the same or different items of foodstuffs.
Access to each compartment is achieved by removing the respective cover segment 2a-2d. The dimensions of the compartment rim surfaces 7 and the position of the lines of perforations 4 are such that removal of one cover segment neither interferes with an adjacent cover segment or segments nor affects the seal of such segment or segments.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of foodstuffs containers in accordance with the invention and that various modifications can readily be
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention. Thus, containers including more than four sealed compartments may be provided.

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A disposable container for two or more separate items of foodstuffs, the container comprising a body having at least two separate compartments each closable by a cover which can be partially removed to expose the contents of one compartment of the container without exposing the other compartment (s) of the container, the container body including one or more internal partitions sealed to the side (s) and cover of the container body which divide the container interior into the separate compartments and each formed with an upper rim to which the cover is attached, the cover including tear lines of weakness which overlie the rim upper surfaces of the partitions to enable that part of the cover which seals one compartment of the
    t container to be removed without exposing the contents of the other compartment (s) of the container.
  2. 2. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the tear lines comprise perforations.
  3. 3. A container as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the compartments are of equal capacity.
  4. 4. A container as claimed in claim I or claim 2 wherein the capacity of each compartment is different.
  5. 5. A container as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 produced from a plastics material.
  6. 6. A container substantially as herein described with reference to Figures I and 2 of the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
