Abstract

A lawn edge cutter includes a pole 1, a blade 5, locking nut 6, a pivot and two wheels connected by a spindle 8. Wheel 4 has a rubber rim whilst wheel 7 has a recess but may alternatively be fitted with a rubber rim. The recessed wheel, when placed on a conventional hosepipe, can be used as a guide.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
LAWN EDGE CUTTER This invention relates to a Lawn Edge Cutter.
The Lawn Edge Cutter performs the same task as a conventional edging ron, In that it cuts lawn edges to specific shapes and sizes, as well as circular beds In comparison to a traditional edging Iron, the invention allows the lawn to be cut quickly, effortlessly and with greater accuracy. It also allows people without any landscape skills to easily use their artistic licence when creating different shaped beds and edges, by using the guides provided.
The Lawn Edge Cutter allows you to cut lawn edges in any shape you want.
By using a conventional garden hosepipe, lay the hosepipe down to any desired shape of your lawn edge, then pin it down using tent like pegs to secure it in place. Place the tyreless wheel of the edge cutter on the hose and then push along. The hosepipe acts like a rail for the recessed wheel of the edge cutter, while the wheel with the tyre runs along the surface of the lawn. - The blade between the two wheels follows, thus cutting through the lawn. By using a length of wood, or wooden dowel or pipe in place of the hosepipe, you can cut straight edges. For circular beds, there is a pin with a pivotting head, which you insert into the lawn. A steel rod is then inserted into the pivot while the opposite end of the rod is put through a hole at the bottom of the edge cutter, just behind the wheels of the edge cutter, which can then be clamped. The clamp can be slackened to allow the edge cutter to slide up and down the rod, to give the desired size of the circular beds. The edge cutter can also be used free hand, by fitting a tyre to the tyreless wheel. This method of using both tyres is also recommended when cutting circular beds with the pivot and rod. For tighter curves and areas of restricted access such as under trees, the head of the cutter can be detached from the main pole and hand held.
The invention can be manufactured out of mild steel, wood or plastic.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The Lawn Edge Cutter is composed of mild steel and plastic, with the main cutting head consisting of two lightweight plastic wheels, measuring 16cms in diametre. One wheel has a rubber tyre around its circumference, whilst the other wheel has a recess around the rim. The wheels are attached to a small spindle measuring 10cms in length. The spindle is attached to a mild steel pole at its centre, with the
wheels flanking the spindle. At the end of the pole is a detachable blade, fixed at a 450 angle to the pole.
At the opposite end of the pole is a plastic handgrip, with a second grip a further 20cms along the pole. The pivot is made of mild steel, measures 15cms in length, and is 8mm in diametre. One end of the pivot is tapered, with a washer 3 cms from the opposite end of the pivot. The rod should measure 8mm in diametre and 100mms in length, produced using mild steel. The end of the rod has a rod-locking nut approximately 5cm up from the spindle, with an 8mm diametre hole, which enables it to fit over the pivot.
The pivot is approximately 8mm in diametre, and 5cms in length.

At the end of the pole is one lightweight plastic wheel with rubber rim 4, measuring 16cms in diametre, with a craft blade 5 that is used for lawn cutting and rod-locking nut 6 for guide cutting.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
As shown in Figure 2, a lightweight plastic wheel with recess 7, with craft blade 5 attached to the end of the pole 1 for lawn cutting The plastic wheel with recess 7 allows for guide cutting with for example, a hosepipe At the opposite side of the guide wheel is wheel 4 with rubber tire attached to pole 1. Both wheels are attached through the middle to spindle 8. The rod-locking nut 6 is situated approximately 5cms up from spindle 8.
As shown in Figure 3, the craft blade 5 attached to spindle 8 with wheel with rubber nm 4 and rod-locking nut 6, all attached to the mild steel pole 1.
As shown in Figure 4, lightweight plastic wheel with recess 7, spindle 8 and craft blade 5, rod-locking nut 6 all attached to the mild steel pole 1.
As shown in Figure Sa, rod-locking nut 6 shown from a side elevation, attached to the mild steel pole 1, with pivot rod 9 through rod-locking nut 6.
As shown in Figure 5b, rod-locking nut 6 shown from an above elevation, with pivot rod 9 through rodlocking nut 6, attached to the mild steel pole 1.
As shown in Figure 5c, rod-locking nut 6 shown from reverse elevation, with pivot rod 9 through rodlocking nut 6, attached to the mild steel pole.
As shown in Figure 6, pivot rod 9 resting on pivot head 5cms from top of pivot 10. Approximately 5cms from the bottom of the pivot 10 the pivot tapers to a point for insertion into ground.
As shown in Figure 7, additional rubber rim 11, for use with recessed wheel 7, for free hand lawn edge cutting.
