Abstract
A two-dimensional (or one-dimensional) matrix of cascading changeover switches offering one-to-one or one-to-many connectivity. The medium connecting the switches terminates in suitable ports depending on application. In data communication application (for example) connections would terminate in RJ45 sockets or plugs. The switches toggle OFF-ON to allow one-to-many or one-to-one connectivity between members of the two 2 sets of plurality of terminating ports.

Patch Matrix
The invention relates to a modular patch matrix that offers one-to-one connectivity using switches instead of patch cables. The assembly can be mounted in a riser cabinet.
Patch panels are set up for one-to-one connectivity using cables in the riser cabinets such that with time these cables become entangled. Maintenance and tracing of cables then become difficult.
An object of this invention is to provide a modular patch matrix that allows the same one-to-one link in the riser but without the patch cables.
Accordingly this invention provides two sets of data outlet ports connected to a two-dimensional matrix of switches. Members of one set (say set A) are isolated from other members of that set but can connect through a set of cascading switches to every member of the other set (say set B) exclusively.
A module is a set of cascading switches linking to the appropriate data outlet port type.
There are various modules differing on the number of cascading switches in the assembly.
The embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1: shows an arrangement which has three data outlet ports in each set with the data transmission medium connected to them represented as
I lines. The switches occupy the points of intersection.
FIGURE 2 shows the switch mechanism. The switch has at minimum two positions:'OFF' (meaning no interconnection) and'ON' (meaning connection is established).
FIGURE 3 shows the switch in the'ON'position allowing link between a pair of outlet ports (one each from the two sets).
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
FIGURE 4 shows the switch in the'OFF'position. This is the default.
In FIGURE 5 the floor-port outlets connection to the patch panel is represented horizontal lines (Set X) and labelled 1,2, 3,4 etc. The other end oftheconnectioninthe"pathroom"isrepresentedbytheverticallines (SET Y) and labelled A, B, C etc. For example the switch linking connection A to floor-port 1 is labelled Al, floor-port 2 is A2 etc. With reference to FIGURE 3 if A2 is'ON', floor-port 2 is connected to port A in the patch
