Abstract

An air intake system, suitable for a vehicle engine, comprises a container (1) enclosing a round foam filter element (2) and an inlet duct (7) leading to the container shaped such that an air flow slows and increases in pressure as it approaches the filter element. The filter element is preferably conical with its wider end fixed to an outlet (3) in line with the inlet duct. The inlet duct preferably narrows before widening, forming a throat (8), thus slowing the flow and increasing the pressure. The housing may be made from a metal or plastics material formed by blow moulding or injection moulding.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
AIR INTAKE SYSTEM This invention relates to an air intake system, more particularly but not exclusively for motor vehicles.
A motor vehicle air intake system may comprise a duct or hose for receiving air at a position where a relatively clean cool supply is available, for example, to one side of or below the radiator and leading to a container enclosing an air filter. The container has an outlet indirectly coupled to the engine air intake manifold.
One object of the invention is to provide an intake system with an improved efficiency in supplying air to the engine. Also, because it is sometimes difficult to fit intake apparatus in under the car bonnet because of the relative position of the incoming duct and the body of the filter, another object is to provide a system which may be more easily installed.
Thus, according to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a system in which the duct leading to the filter container is shaped such that the air slows down as it reaches the filter so increasing the pressure at the filter.
The filter may be cylindrical or possibly partly conical and the air from the duct or hose leads to the outside of the peripheral surface. The air goes through the filter and thence to the outlet.
The filter may be a paper element. It has been proposed to make a cylindrical or conical foam element.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided air intake apparatus comprising a container enclosing a round foam filter element and having an inlet duct that leads to the container such that the air slows and increases in pressure and approaches the filter element from the side or end of the filter.
Preferably the filter is partly conical.
Reference will now be made by way of example to the accompanying drawings, the single figure of which is an air filter for a vehicle.
The filter shown comprises a cylindrical carbon or glass fibre reinforced housing 1.
Inside the housing 1 there is a partly conical foam air filter 2 with its wider end fixed to an end outlet fitting 3 having curved sides 3a. Fitting 3 communicates with the central aperture within the filter 2 and connects with the vehicle air manifold (not shown) possibly via a supercharger of"turbo" (not shown). The fitting 3 and hence, also the filter 2 is held in housing 1 by an end cap 4 which has an aperture 4a and which is fixed to the housing 1 by screws 5 engaged with captive nuts 6. Nuts 6 are fixed to the sides of the housing 1 near the end of housing 1.
At the other end of housing 1, it merges with a duct portion 7 which initially reduces in diameter and then widens out again to the end of the duct portion 7. A duct or hose (not shown) leads from the end of duct portion 7 to a cool air inlet position under the car bonnet. The narrowing and then widening duct portion 7 forming a throat 8 acts to slow down air flowing into the housing 1 and increase
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
its pressure. This air then reaches the peripheral surface of filter 2 via the direction of its narrower end 9.
Instead of making the housing from carbon or glass fibre reinforced resin, it could be made from metal or plastics material, for example, by blow moulding or injection moulding or from any other suitable material.
The filter element 2 could be cylindrical provided it is dimensioned for there to be clearance between it and the sides of the housing 1 (so that air can reach the sides of the element).
In the embodiment shown, the duct portion 7 is coupled to the end of the cylindrical housing 1, i. e. so duct 7 is in line with axis of filter 2 and outlet fitting 3. As an alternative, the duct 7 could merge into the side of container 1 so the air from duct portion 7 approaches the side of the filter element 2, i. e. perpendicular to the axes of filter element 2 and outlet fitting 3.
