Abstract

A vessel has a retractable auxiliary rudder 2 which can be raised or lowered from a housing 3 towards the front end of the vessel by means of a manual 7 or electric powered 6 winch. In use when the auxiliary rudder is in its lowered position it is steered by a separate control means 9 to the control means 10 which steers the main rudder 1. The auxiliary rudder may be used at times when the main rudder has become disabled to ensure that the vessel can still be steered.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Secondary Ships Rudder This invention relates to a second rudder placed at the fore part of the vessel. (Fig 1 At 2) It also shows the outline of the vessel and the after part with the main rudder and steering wheel. (No 1 & 10) In the fore part of the vessel shows the second rudder 2 in its housing 3, that can be raised or lowered. In its lowered position on the sketch by a wire 5 leading to an electric or hand powered winch if that need arises.
The vessel is then steered by the wheel 9 in the normal way as in 10 the vessels main steering.
This could have prevented the many groundings and wrecks polluting the coastline over many years like H. M. S. ARK ROYAL colliding with the Forth Bridge on the 25 th of July 2001.
The opening in the forepart of the keel 3 housing the second rudder 2 is reinforced steel in the vessels shell plating. The keel is circular in shape giving added strength to compensate for the loss of bending moments and stresses the vessel may suffer with no loss of strength than if bow thrusters were in place.
The electric or hand powered winch 6 & 7 and the brake 8 when switched on energises a magnet that attracts the ratchet ball keeping it disengaged.
Finally I lost most of my shipmates on the Battle Cruiser REPULSE going round and round the Battleship H. M. S. PRINCE OF WALES that had lost her steering in conflict with Japanese aircraft.

Secondary Ships Rudder.
After many years in the Royal Fleet Auxilliaryship, the Admiral Fitzroy, Captain J. Morgan R. N. R. who experimented in the middle of the North Atlantic in the most appalling weather this centuary has suffered by hoving the vessel"Hove Too"without engines by balancing the vessel between wind waves and swell in gusting winds of 170 knots and found the only way a vessel will steer is by rudder.
To the critics who say"We have bow thrusters and main engines to steer by", we say they are only good sometimes for coming into port, they are no use at deep sea.
