Abstract
An alarm system 10 such as a vehicle alarm system, comprises a sensor 12 for detecting unauthorised activities and a device 16 for dialling a pre-determined mobile telephone 18 number in response to a signal from the sensor 12 indicative of unauthorised activities. Once the pre-determined number is dialled, a message is sent to inform the mobile telephone 18 user of the unauthorised activities. The message may be test or pre-recorded audio. A tracking signal may also be sent to enable location of the vehicle.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
An Alarm System The present invention relates to an alarm system and in particular a vehicle alarm.
Many houses and vehicles are fitted with alarm systems, which are activated when unauthorised activities are detected. For example, car alarms are typically activated when car door is opened and the alarm is set. Whilst such alarms provide some form of protection, often they are ignored by passers by. This gives thieves time to escape and so reduces the effectiveness of the alarm.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved alarm system and in particular an improved alarm system for a vehicle.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an alarm system comprising: means for detecting unauthorised activities, means for dialling a pre-determined mobile device number in response to a signal indicative of unauthorised activities from the means for detecting and means for sending a message to inform the mobile device user of the unauthorised activities.
The mobile device may be a mobile telephone or a pager or some other form of mobile telecommunications device.
An advantage of this system is that when, for example, a vehicle is broken into
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
the owner of the vehicle can be called on his mobile telephone. The owner can then intervene if they are near enough to the vehicle or telephone the police.
Preferably, the alarm system is a vehicle alarm.
The means for detecting unauthorised activities may comprise a vehicle alarm.
The message may be a text message or may be a predetermined audio message.
The means for dialling a pre-determined number may comprise a mobile telephone device or a pager.
The means for dialling a pre-determined number may be operable to do so periodically until the alarm is de-activated. An advantage of this is that the signal can be traced by the mobile telephone network provider and used to pin point the location of the vehicle.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method comprising : detecting unauthorised activities, dialling a pre-determined mobile device number in response to a signal indicative of unauthorised activities from the means for detecting and sending a message to inform the mobile device user of the unauthorised activities.
The mobile device may be a mobile telephone or a pager or some other form of mobile telecommunications device.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
The message may be a text message or may be a pre-recorded audio message.
According to yet another aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle alarm system comprising: means for detecting unauthorised activities; and means for sending an alarm message to a pre-determined telecommunications address in response to a signal indicative of unauthorised activities from the means for detecting.
The pre-determined telecommunications address may be a pre-determined telephone number, preferably a mobile telephone number. The alarm message may be a text message or a pre-recorded audio message.
According to still another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for detecting unauthorised tampering with a vehicle comprising: detecting unauthorised activities; and sending an alarm message to a pre-determined telecommunications address in response to a signal indicative of unauthorised activities from the means for detecting.
Preferably, the pre-determined telecommunications address is a pre-determined telephone number, preferably a mobile telephone number. The alarm message may be a text message or a pre-recorded audio message.
Various aspects of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying Figure, which shows a block diagram of an alarm system.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
The Figure shows a vehicle alarm system 10, which has a sensor 12 for detecting unauthorised activities, such as the opening of a car door, and a processor 14 for receiving signals from the sensor 12 and interpreting whether or not there is an alarm condition. Connected to the processor 14 is a mobile telephone device 16 that is operable to dial a predetermined mobile telephone number on receipt of an alarm signal from the processor 14. The alarm signal may include the appropriate number or this may be stored in the mobile telephone device 16. The mobile telephone 18 typically belongs to the vehicle owner. Once the pre-determined number is dialled, the mobile device 16 sends a message to the owner either by means of a pre-set text message or using a prerecorded audio message.
Included in the mobile telephone device 16 is a transmitter (not shown) for transmitting a tracking signal. This is activated when an alarm condition is detected. An advantage of this is that the location of the vehicle can be detected.
Optionally connected to the processor 14 is a device for generating an audible alarm when an alarm condition is detected.
When the sensor 12 detects, for example, the opening of the vehicle door, a signal is sent to the processor 14 where an assesment is made to determine whether or not there is an alarm conidtion. If the processor 14 determines that there is such an alarm condition, the audible alarm is activated and the predetermined mobile telephone number is dialled. Once this is done, a message is sent to the mobile telephone 18 to notify the owner of the attempted theft. The
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
owner is then in an informed position and can take whatever action is deemed necessary. Additionally, the mobile telephone device 16 generates the tracking signal, which can be used to identify the location of the vehicle. This tracking signal is transmitted until the alarm system is de-activated.
An advantage of the system described is that vehicle owner can be notified immediately. This increases the likelihood that action can be taken to prevent the theft.
A skilled person will appreciate that variations of the disclosed arrangements are possible without departing from the invention. Accordingly, the above description of a specific embodiment is made by way of example and not for the purposes of limitation. It will be clear to the skilled person that minor modifications can be made without significant changes to the operation described above.
