Abstract

A local alarm system comprises a communication device which communicates with a remote device (which can be a GSM cellular telephone), including a receiver arranged to receive a signal containing data indicative of the remote device to be called on detection of an alarm event. The remote device sends a verification signal to the alarm system when an alarm is to be set. The signal is read by the alarm system, and a communication path is established between the alarm system and the remote device. In the event of an alarm system being triggered, a signal is send to the remote device along the communication path to inform the remote device that the alarm has been activated. A user of the remote device can then take the appropriate steps to determine what further action is required.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
SECURITY ALARM SYSTEMS This invention relates to security alarm systems. More particularly, this invention relates to a device within a security alarm system which is capable of communicating with a remote party in the event of an alarm condition being detected.
Many types of security alarm systems are available on the market. They range from simple audible sound alarms to GSM back-up and call centre police notification.
The basic system has sensors that when activated cause a password protected control box to set off an audible alarm.
The more advanced systems are connected by a landline to a call centre, which will call the subscriber to check for a false alarm. The police will then accept notification from the call centre and react accordingly. Security systems are also available which utilise the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) Standard. Here the System monitors the condition of the landline and on detection of a line failure uses a GSM cellular device to call a call centre which will in turn contact the police if necessary. The cost associated with subscription to these types of services can be uneconomical and police support to a call from a call centre can be poor.
An object of the present invention is to remove the need for a call centre and instead introduce a neighbour based security system.
From one aspect, the present invention provides a security alarm system which comprises : a transmitter arranged to transmit alarm alert data to a remote device through a communication link;
a receiver arranged to receive a signal containing data implicative of the zu remote device to be called on detection of an alarm event ; a processor to control the operations carried out by said alarm system; a storage means to store the data indicative of the remote device;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
alarm detection means arranged to detect an alarm event and send a signal to said processor, said processor being arranged to access the data stored in said storage means related to said remote device and send alert data from said transmitter to said remote device via said communication link.
In a preferred embodiment the data is transmitted and received using the same communications link. However, it will be appreciated that data may be transmitted and received using different communication links.
From a second aspect, the present invention provides a method of operating a security alarm system, said method comprising steps of : receiving a message from a remote device to be called on detection of an alarm event; capturing data indicative of the remote device from said message, and storing said data in a storage means; detecting an alarm event using alarm detection means and sending a signal to a processor which controls the operations carried out by said alarm system; accessing the data indicative of the remote device stored in the storage means; and sending alert data from a transmitter arranged to transmit alarm alert data, to a remote device via a communications link.
From a third aspect, the present invention provides a communication device to be utilised in a security alarm system, said device comprising: a transmitter arranged to receive a signal containing data indicative of a remote device to be called on detection of an alarm event; a control means to control the operations carried out by said communication device; a storage means to store the data indicative of the remote device; and means for communicating with said security alarm system.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
In order that the present invention be more readily understood, embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example with references to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows the arrangement of a local alarm system and a remote device according to one embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 2 shows the local alarm system in more detail.
A local alarm system according to the present invention is provided with means to communicate with a remote device. The remote device sends a verification signal to the alarm system when an alarm is to be set. The signal is read by the alarm system and a communication path is established between the alarm system and the remote device. In the event of the alarm system being triggered, a signal is sent to the remote device along the communication path to inform the remote device that the alarm has been activated. A user of the remote device can then take the appropriate steps to determine what further action is required.
The present invention will now be described in more detail by referring to Figure 1 in which the alarm system and the remote device communicate through a cellular telephone communication path.
Figure 1 shows a local alarm system 10 which is typically found in a users household. In this embodiment, the alarm system 10 is provided with a Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) enabled device 15 which is incorporated into the alarm system 10 through connection points which exist on the alarm system control boxes. The GSM device 15 has the capability of communicating with a remote user' communication device 20 through a communication network 30. The remote user' communication device 20 is typically a GSM cellular telephone and the communication network is a cellular telephone communication network.
In use, if the user wishes to activate the alarm system 10, they may do so in a conventional manner, which is well known in the art, but also have the option of establishing a communication path between the alarm system 10 and the remote
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
device 20 which may belong to a neighbour. This communication path is established by sending a predetermined message string, for example a short set of ASCII characters such as"/ : ?", from a remote users communication device 20 to the GSM device 15 in the form of an SMS. The message string is recognised by the device 15 and the phone number of the remote device 20 from which the message was sent is captured by the GSM device 15 and stored in a storage means which forms part of the GSM device 15.
Once the communication path is established between the two devices 15,20, the local alarm system 10 is enabled. A typical alarm system 10 comprises a plurality of sensors 11,12, 13. These sensors may be any kind of detection sensor known in the art. In this embodiment, a motion detector sensor is utilised. With the alarm system enabled, any movement triggers the sensor, which in turn triggers the local alarm and, causes the alarm to produce a highly audible sound to alert anyone in the surrounding area that a sensor has been triggered. Additionally, an SMS message giving source, an alert string, for example'may day'and send time details is sent the selected remote user. The remote user, in this case the neighbour, can then easily check for false alarms and if a crime is at hand or suspected, the neighbour can call the police.
It should be appreciated that the GSM device 15 will report to said remote device 20 until the aforementioned string"/ : ?", is sent to the GSM device 15 from another remote device, in which case the GSM device 15 will recognise the message string from the other remote device and capture the phone number of said other device. In the event of an alarm condition being sensed by the alarm system 10, an SMS message will be sent to said other remote device instead of the first remote device 20.
The predetermined message string eg"/ : ?", can be considered to be a password which is only made available to users who are permitted to control the alarm system.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
It will be appreciated that the message string is not limited to"/ : ?" and may be pre-programmed into the GSM device and may be altered by the user of the security alarm system if necessary.
The GSM device 15 is capable of periodically sending a message to a call centre informing the centre that the local alarm system 10 is in working order. The call centre is also capable of using a communication application such as HyperTerminal or Kermit to send a command to the alarm system to perform a selfcheck and ensure it is in working order.
It will be appreciated that the GSM device 15 may be replaced by a device to communicate with a landline telephone via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) instead of a cellular telephone.
The local alarm system 10 will now be described in more detail by referring to Figure 2 which shows an alternative embodiment of the present invention.
The alarm system is enabled by receiving a signal form a remote device and this signal being recognised by a processor 14 which is part of the alarm system. The signal is received by a receiver 18 and sent to the processor which examines the signal by reading the contents of a storage means which contains data for each registered remote device. Once the correct remote device details are accessed, a communication link is established between the remote device and the alarm system 10. In the event that a detection sensor 11,12, 13 is triggered, an alert signal is sent by the transmitter 17 to the remote device to inform it of the alarm being activated. To de-activate the alarm, a valid code is entered into the alarm system or a key is utilised.
It will be appreciated that the present invention can be utilised in any compatible alarm system which includes intruder and fire alarm systems.
