Abstract

A friction material for a vehicle braking system has regions of different colours so as to provide a visual indication of the degree of wear. Region 106 is coloured yellow while region 107 is coloured red. Some dust produced is deposited on surrounding regions of the vehicle, changes in the colour of the dust indicating the wear level. A disk brake pad incorporating such material is described, but the material may be applied to drum brakes.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
WEAR-INDICATING FRICTION MATERIALS The present invention relates to a means for indicating when brake friction materials are wearing beyond acceptable limits and more specifically to means for indicating when vehicle brake friction materials are wearing excessively Vehicle and machinery braking systems include members which are faced with materials, called friction materials, which have high coefficients of friction and which are forced against moving members the motions of which are to be arrested The braking forces generated and the resistance to fade are direct functions of the thickness of the friction materials used and undetected excessive wear of vehicle brake pads and shoes is a cause of accidents It is known to provide vehicle brake pads with embedded metal contacts which, when exposed due to the wear of the brake pads, make electrical contact with the associated brake disks and cause a warning light on the dashboard of the vehicle concerned to be illuminated.
However, such systems are only fitted to more sophisticated cars. Also, such wearindicating systems are not reliable because of failure of the electrical connections to the contacts embedded in the brake pads Another disadvantage of such brake wear indicating systems is that the warning of brake pad wear is only given to the occupants of the vehicle concerned It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved means for indicating when the wear of brake friction materials is excessive According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a body of friction material for use in a braking system wherein the colour of the friction material is graded across the thickness of the body of friction material According to the present invention in a second aspect there is provided a component for use in a braking system, comprising a backing member to which is attached a layer
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
of friction material wherein the colour of the friction material is graded across the layer of friction material In use, as the friction material is abraded duct is created which is deposited on the surfaces surrounding the brake pads or shoes This is particularly so in the case of motor vehicle disk brake systems where the dust abraded from the brake pads causes black deposits on the vehicle wheels, which are readily apparent to an onlooker In the case of brake pads embodying the present invention the colour of this dust changes as wear of the friction material progresses and this colour change provides a visible indication of the wear of the brake pads without the need to inspect the brake pads themselves and which is readily apparent to anyone in the vicinity of the vehicle, whether it be the driver, a would-be passenger, maintenance mechanic or other interested party Suitably the friction material could be coloured so that yellow dust is produced when wear of the friction material has proceeded to a point where the performance of the friction material is beginning to be degraded and a red dust is produced when the wear of the friction material has proceeded to the point where the performance of the friction material is seriously degraded The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a disk brake pad embodying the invention Referring to the drawing, a motor vehicle disk brake pad 100 consists of a steel backing plate 101 the shape of which is a part of a sector of a circle the diameter of which is approximately the same as that of the brake disk with which it is to be used Projecting from each of the radial edges 102 of the backing member 101 are locating tongues 103, only one of which is visible in the drawing Bonded to the backing member 101 is a block 104 of friction material The block of friction material also is sectorial in shape but is smaller than the backing member 103 The block of friction material 104 has three regions, 105, 106 107 of different colours The initially
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
exposed region 105 is the colour of the original friction material, the region 106 is coloured yellow and the region 107 is coloured red The yellow region 106 of the block of friction material 104 begins at the position where the performance of the block 104 of friction material is beginning to be impaired because of the wear of the block 104 of friction material and the red region 107 of the block 104 of friction material begins at a position where the performance of the block 104 of friction material is seriously impaired because of the wear of the block 104 of friction material.
Thus, as the block 104 of friction material wears, the dust produced changes from black to yellow to red as wear proceeds The dust is deposited on surrounding regions of the vehicle's chassis and the vehicle's wheels where it is readily apparent to an onlooker, giving an immediately apparent indication of the state of wear of the vehicle's brakes The invention has been described in relation to vehicular disk brake pads It is equally applicable to drum brake shoes and to friction brakes for machinery
