Abstract

An adjustable ceiling support comprises a vertical support wall 1 and a ceiling support wall 5, wherein the ceiling support wall 5 is pivotally attached to the vertical support wall 1 so that it can pivot between a horizontal position orthogonal to the vertical support wall and a vertical position parallel to the vertical support wall. The adjustable ceiling support has the advantage that it can be folded to pass through doors.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
AN ADJUSTABLE CEILING SUPPORT The present invention relates to an adjustable ceiling support. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to an adjustable ceiling support comprising a ceiling support wall adjustable between substantially horizontal and vertical positions.
When building a single storey of a multi-storey building, one first builds the vertical walls of that storey. One then erects a ceiling support in a room of the storey and constructs the ceiling on this support. This ceiling also serves as the floor for the storey above. Once the ceiling has been constructed the ceiling support is dismantled to fit through a door of the room and then re-assembled in the next room of that storey. This is clearly time consuming.
In an attempt to overcome this problem the outer wall of the storey of a building is often built after the ceiling. In this way the ceiling support can be moved from one room, out of the building through the space where the outer wall will be, and into the next room. Whilst it is not necessary to dis-assemble the ceiling support a crane is required which can be expensive. In addition, in many buildings it is desired to build the outer wall at the same as the other walls of that storey.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an adjustable ceiling support comprising: a substantially vertical support wall; and a ceiling support wall; wherein the ceiling support wall is pivotally attached to the vertical support wall and is adapted to pivot between a horizontal position substantially orthogonal to the support wall and a vertical position inclined to the vertical support wall.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The adjustable ceiling support according to the invention has the advantage that it can be folded to pass through doors, so enabling it to be moved from one room to the next and then simply unfolded to form a ceiling support. Dismantling and reassembling is not required.
In addition, the ceiling support according to the invention is quick and easy to use.
Also, no crane is required.
Preferably, when in the vertical position the ceiling support wall is substantially parallel to the vertical support wall. This minimises the width of the adjustable ceiling support.
The ceiling support wall can be attached to the vertical support wall along the upper edge of the vertical support wall.
The vertical support wall can comprise a horizontal support portion extending from the upper edge thereof and wherein the ceiling support wall is pivotally connected to the horizontal support portion.
This separates the ceiling support wall from the vertical portion of the vertical support wall so enabling the two to lie parallel.
The adjustable ceiling support can further comprise and end wall pivotally connected to an end portion of the vertical support wall. This increases the rigidity of the resulting structure.
The adjustable ceiling support can further comprise wheels for transporting the ceiling support.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Preferably the adjustable ceiling support comprises at least one adjustable strut adapted to extend between the vertical support wall and the ceiling support wall. Again, this increases the rigidity of the resulting structure.
The present invention will now be described by way of example only and not in any limitative sense with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :- Fig 1 shows a perspective view of an adjustable ceiling support according to the invention.
The adjustable ceiling support of Fig 1 comprises a substantially vertical support wall (1). The vertical support wall (1) comprises a vertical portion (2) having a horizontal support portion (3) extending from the upper edge (4) thereof. Horizontal support portion (3) is parallel to the ground.
Pivotally connected to the horizontal support portion (3) is a ceiling support wall (5).
When in a horizontal position (not shown) the ceiling support wall (5) and horizontal support portion of (3) together define a support surface on which the ceiling can be assembled.
The ceiling support wall (5) can be pivoted to a vertical position as shown. In this position the ceiling support wall is substantially parallel to the vertical portion (2). In this configuration the width W of the adjustable ceiling support is minimised enabling the support to pass through narrow doors or other apertures.
The vertical support wall (1) also comprises an end wall portion (6) extending substantially orthogonally from an end (7) thereof. Pivotally connected to the end wall portion (6) is the end wall (7). The end wall (7) can be pivoted between open and closed positions. In the open position (not shown) the end wall portion (6) and end wall (7) together form a support surface. In the closed position (shown) the end wall (7) is parallel to the vertical portion of the vertical support wall (1) again minimising the width W of the adjustable ceiling support.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Frame (8) supports the vertical support wall (1) maintaining its portions in their respective relative positions. A plurality of grooves (9) extend vertically down the back of the vertical portion of the vertical support wall (1). Engaged with each groove (9) is an adjustable strut (10) which is pivotally connected at its end remote from the groove (9) to the ceiling support wall (5). By altering the length of the strut (10) one can pivot the ceiling support wall (5) between vertical and horizontal positions.
Wheels are provided for moving the adjustable ceiling support between locations.
In use, the adjustable ceiling support is altered to its minimum width configuration and is then moved through a room door of a building into a room. Once in position in the room the ceiling support wall (5) is extended to its horizontal position and the end wall pivoted to the open position. The ceiling is then constructed supported by the ceiling support.
Once the ceiling has been constructed the ceiling support is again refolded to its minimum width configuration and moved through the door to the next room.
