Abstract
A tapered toothed wedge of reinforced plastics co-operates with a packing wedge to grip and fix lead flashing into a masonry joint. The toothed side of the wedge is used to grip the lead, the other, smooth, side of the wedge slides against the packing wedge, so that the lead is forced inwards into the joint.
Description

Description FIXING WEDGE The invention is a fixing wedge which when used saves on labour, cost and is a permanent fixing for lead flashing to masonry.
Prior to my invention, in order to fix lead flashings to masonry one had to rake out the cement joint, prior to cutting out strips of lead which had to be folded to the approximate thickness of the mortar joint and then it had to be tapped in together with the lead flashing which was offered up to the joint. This often required two, if not three people, especially on long flashing.
The invention saves on the cost of labour, the lead used to fix the flashing to the masonry, but moreover once the wedge is in place it becomes a permanent fixture, and does not suffer from the problems associated with convention fitting of lead flashing and subsequently corrosion, due to adverse weather conditions.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Using the fixing wedge which is made from reinforced plastic, this automatically takes in the lead flashing to the back of the joint. This is used together with a packing wedge, also made from reinforced plastic. The wedges fit back to back (ie. smooth side to smooth side). The wedge ensures that the lead flashing is pushed to the back of the joint, thus ensuring it is completely waterproof. By using these wedges, this allows the fixing wedge to easily slide into place. The teeth of the wedge dig into the lead. This packing wedge is needed to save any damage caused to the fixing wedge, and also the brick work damaging the fixing wedge.
In the event the joint is more than standard %"gap ie. stone masonry a wider packing wedge can be used to compensate the thicker bed of mortar.
Any excess of the wedge can then be quickly sawn off Figure 1 Shows a cross section of brick wall with wedges and flashing in place Figure 2 Shows isometric view of wedge with dimensions.

Claims (3)
- Claim The fixing wedge for lead flashing is a tapered wedge of reinforced plastic with teeth which when joined with a packing wedge ensure permanent fixture of lead flashing and masonry.As well as ensuring the lead does not come out from erosion, the wedge saves on the cost of lead and substantially on labour.<Desc/Clms Page number 4>Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS 1. A fixing wedge system for lead flashing, consisting of a tapered wedge of reinforced plastic with teeth on one face adapted in use to bear against the surface of the lead, the opposed face of the wedge being smooth, and a packing wedge smooth on both faces, one face adapted in use to bear against the masonry within a joint, and the other face to bear against the fixing wedge, whereby to force it against the lead.
- 2. A method of fixing a lead flashing, using the wedge system of claim 1.
- 3. A fixing wedge system according to claim 1, or its method of use, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
