Abstract
An Extrusion Die (Slipper) 2 Adjustment Mechanism that enables a means for the Slipper(s) 2 to be pivoted radially about the shaft that supports the Roller 1 in such manner as to maintain the relationship set between the Slipper(s) 2 and Roller 1. In the rotated position the Slipper(s) 2 can be adjusted or checked. The Adjustment Mechanism may also incorporate one or more of the traditional Slipper(s) setting devices.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
EXTRUSION DIE (SLIPPER) ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM This invention relates to a holding, adjustment and setting mechanism for use in extrusion machines, typically used, but not limited to products such as, roof tiles, paving slabs and wall cladding products.
Such extrusion machines are well known for producing these products and comprise a system of feeding moulds through the"Extrusion Head"whereby the top surface of the product is formed by a roller and/or paddle (or similar system) hereinafter referred to as the Roller and one or more extrusion dies, hereinafter referred to as a"Slipper" or"Slippers". The relationship between the Slipper (s) to Roller relative to the mould or other base system is critical to forming the product. The traditional means of setting and checking the "Slipper's" relationship is inherently a time consuming complicated procedure performed by trained personnel. If a machine is stopped for any length of time during a production run the material inside the extrusion head can lose"workability'resulting in high pressure and additional load when the machine is restarted, this can cause damage to high value parts. To overcome this problem the Slipper must be"backed-off"or partially removed to relieve the pressure. The Slipper must then be returned to its working position, this can be difficult and time consuming to achieve and may need to be re-adjusted. If the Slipper is repositioned incorrectly, damage may occur.
The object of this invention is to provide a more simple means of setting, adjusting and checking the relationship between the Slipper to Roller and mould or base, even when the Extrusion Head is mounted on the Extrusion Machine. The invention also enables pressure in the machine to be relieved in the event of an emergency, without affecting positional accuracy.
Accordingly this invention provides an Extrusion Die (Slipper) Adjustment Mechanism that enables a means for the Slipper (s) to be pivoted radially about the shaft that supports the Roller in such manner as to maintain the relationship set between the Slipper and Roller.
The Slipper (s) may be supported on a Cross Strap, which may also house the adjustment devices used for adjusting each Slipper individually and relative to each other. This adjustment may also be used for setting the distance between the Roller and Slipper.
An example of the embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which :- Figure 1 shows an example sectional isometric view of the Roller 1 mounted on Shaft 3 and Slipper 2 mounted on optional Strap 4 which is able to pivot about Shaft 3. For
clarity a symbolic extruded product 6 is shown passing under the Roller 1 and Slipper I)
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 2 shows a side view of an Extrusion Head with the Strap 4 mounted in such manner as to pivot about the Shaft 3.
Figure 3 shows a sectional side view of an Extrusion Head with the Slipper 2 mounted on Strap 4 in a working position.
Figure 4 shows a sectional side view of an Extrusion Head with the Slipper 2 mounted on Strap 4 in a setting position.
Figure 5 shows a diagrammatic view of the setting relationships between the Roller 1 and the Slipper 2 Referring to the drawing, figure 1 shows the slipper attached to an optional Strap 4 by optional adjustment studs/nuts/bolts. The Strap 4 is able to rotate about Shaft 3 to enable the Slipper 2 to be moved to different positions as shown in fig 4 and fig 5 thus enabling the relative position between the Roller 1 and Slipper 2 to be inspected and adjusted. This illustrates that after the relationships DIM'A','B'and ANGLE'C' are set, the configuration can be rotated to any position maintaining those relationships as shown in fig 5.
In the working position, the Strap 4 is constrained relative to the product 6 being produced. The amount of pressure and compaction can be finely adjusted to give the desired technical properties to the extruded product.
In the case of an interruption during production when the pressure in the system must be relieved, the invention allows for that pressure to be relieved by allowing the Slipper 2 to rotate around the Shaft 3 in the direction of extrusion. When it is desired to return to the normal production setting, this can simply be achieved by rotating the Slipper 2 back to the desired constrained working position.
At any time, the relationship between the Roller 1 and the Slipper 2 may be inspected for wear, damage and relative position. This is achieved by rotating the Slipper 2 round Roller 1 as shown in fig 4 to a convenient angle for access.
