Abstract
237,468. Johnson, J. Y., (Viscosc Co.). Oct. 23, 1924. Waste products, treatment and utitization of. -Apparatus for the recovery of caustic alkali from " black liquor " from pulp mills comprises a series of compartments a containing a series of dialytic cells 20 through which the waste liquor is passed in the opposite direction to a flow of a solvent such as water through the series of compartments. As shown, a pipe 18 conveys the water from the bottom of one compartment to the upper part of the next, the inlet and outlet pipes being preferably at opposite ends of each compartment. A pipe 21 conducts impure solution from an open extension 22 above each cell, to the bottom of the next cell. The open extensions 22 are stated to compensate for the varying density of the solution. Each cell comprises an open frame having flanges to which the edges of the membranes are secured by frame-plates. Vertical bars also bolted to the flanges may provide feet and handles at their opposite ends. Sediment may be removed from the cells by suction pipes let down through the extension 22. Suitable membranes may be prepared by immersing cotton sheeting in sulphuric acid of sp. gr. 1.1 at a temperature below 30‹ C. for two minutes and removing the acid.
