Abstract

A body warmer, comprising a thermally insulating jacket 100 and means 101, 102, 103 for attaching the jacket to a body, wherein the jacket includes a layer of a heat storage medium. More specifically the jacket is designed to supply warmth to new born animals such as lambs which are often born out of doors, thus preventing death by hypothermia. The heat storage medium, preferably a gel with a high thermal capacity such as aqueous sodium acetate, allows the jackets to be preheated before use. The jackets may also be waterproofed, treated with a pungent material to deter predators such as foxes and fitted with a carrying handle.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
BODY WARMER The present invention relates to a body warmer and more specifically to a jacket for supplying warmth to new-born animals.
New-born animals pass through a initial period before their body temperature maintaining systems are fully effective and death from hypothermia is a danger during this period. This danger is particularly acute in the case of lambs, which tend to be born during the late winter and out-of-doors where heat sources are not available.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a body warmer which is capable of supplying heat to rather than merely reducing heat loss from, a body and can be used in circumstances where no electrical power supplies are available.
According to the present invention, there is provided a body warmer, comprising a thermally insulating jacket and means for attaching the jacket to a body, wherein the jacket includes a layer of a heat storage medium.
Preferably the heat storage medium is a gel having a high thermal capacity, such as aqueous sodium acetate.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Referring to the drawing, a body warmer for use with new-born or very young animals such as lambs consists of a jacket 100 made from two layers of material shaped to fit under the neck and trunk of an animal while leaving its anal region exposed. The outer layer is made of a thermally insulating material, which advantageously also may be made waterproof.
The jacket 100 is held in place by pairs of tapes 101,102 and 103. In use, the tapes 101 are passed under the neck of the animal and the tapes 102, 103 are passed cross-wire under the trunk of the animal before being tied together. This arrangement reduces any tendency for the jacket to move forward if the animal moves. Such movement could be further restricted by including a loop to go under the animal's tail.
The jacket 100 is filled with a gelatinous material which has a high thermal capacity, such as aqueous sodium acetate or other, as they are known, thermal gel.
In use, a farmer would heat a number of jackets before going out to inspect sheep which are about to lamb, or recently have lambed, and if any of the lambs are showing signs of hypothermia, then a jacket is fitted to that lamb.
As an alternative to the pairs of tapes 101,102 and 103, which have to be tied, patches of one component of the releasable material sold under the Registered Trade Mark'Velcro'can be attached to the jacket, and patches of the other component of the material can be attached to single tapes. In another arrangement (not illustrated) the jacket 100 is so cut as to provide overlapping edge regions to which are attached'Velcro' (Registered Trade Mark) panels.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
The outer material may be treated with a pungent material, such as creosote, which is repugnant to foxes.
Also, a carrying handle may be attached to the top of the jacket as fitted to an animal.
