Abstract

The signpost, for securing to a corrugated crash barrier, comprises a post to which a first plate is secured so that it projects outwards from the post. A second u-shaped and contoured plate is attached to the first plate by hinges 4 so that it can move from a first position to a second, locking position where the contour of the plate extends around and underneath the upper portion of the barrier. A bolt 1 extends across between the legs of the second plate which is formed with a central section that has a semi-circular cross-section so that when the bolt is in a first position it can be received in a section of tube 2 secured to the first plate which has a longitudinal section cut of it. Once the bolt is received in the tube it can be rotated so that the semicircular portion of the bolt is not aligned with the gap in the tube so that the bolt, and hence also the second plate, cannot be moved upwards, thereby securing the signpost to the barrier.

Description

SIGNPOST FOR CRASH BARRIERS A one piece signpost for temporary use on Tensioned Corrugated Barriers (TCB) and Untensioned Corrugated Barriers (UCB) It can be quickly, easily and securely fitted or removed and needs no extra weights for stability in inclement weather. The post will accept a variety of"multi-sign"interchangeable frames and can be fitted with a hazard warning beacon fitted into the top of the hollow post.
Figure 1 shows the one piece signpost.
Figure 2 shows the top anchoring plate which is fastened to the post.
Figure 3 shows the hinged locking plate.
Figure 4 shows an alternative locking plate where a more permanent fitting is desired.
Figure 5 shows the post from the rear showing the plate fitted to prevent a twisting motion.
Figure 6 shows two views of the locking bolt.
Figure 7 shows a cross section of the locking plate in the open position.
Figure 8 shows a cross section of the locking plate in the closed position.
Figure 9 shows a cross section of the locking plate in the locked position.
Figure 10 shows one of the interchangeable sign frames.
Figure 11 shows the hazard warning lamp.
Figure 12 shows the post in the locked position with a sign frame and hazard warning lamp fitted.
The post (Fig. 1) is made of hollow box section small enough to fit between the barriers where two barriers have been fitted back to back on the same support post. This makes it equally suitable where either single or double barriers are in use. It extends in length from just below the bottom of the crash barrier to above the height required to accommodate the sign. It has a wide plate (Fig. 2) fastened to it at the exact angle of the top corrugation of the crash barrier. Hinged to this (Fig2/4, Fig 3/4) is another plate (Fig 3) which is shaped to the contours of the barrier. The hinged plate (Fig. 3) has two short pipes fastened to it (Fig 3/1) to locate the locking bolt (Fig. 6). It is allowed to swing from the open position (Fig. 7) which is clear of the barrier and allows easy positioning of the post, to the closed position (Fig 8) which brings the locking plate to fit under the top corrugation with the locking bolt in the pipe (Fig 2/2) and then to the locked position (Fig 9) in the pipe fastened to plate (Fig. 2). This pipe (Fig. 2/2) has a quadrant removed to accept the section of the locking bolt (Fig. 6/3) which has a semicircle removed to allow entry and then, when swung through 180 degrees, to lock it in position. To the rear of the fixed plate (Fig 2) another plate has been fastened vertically to it (Fig 5/5) to facilitate initial positioning on the barrier and prevent any twisting motion in high winds Figure 4 shows an alternative locking plate to be used when a more permanent fitting is desired. The contoured section of the plate is extended past the centre of the corrugated barrier and a hole is drilled (Fig 4/6) which corresponds with the extra support post holes already drilled in the barrier. This can then be bolted in place.
A retaining sleeve (Fig 1/7) is fitted to the post to prevent the sign frame (Fig 10) from travelling too far down the post and affecting the locking mechanism.
Figure 10 shows one of a selection of multi-sign frames that could be fitted to the post.
Two gussetted boxes (Fig 10/8) are fastened to the back of the frame to slide onto the post and a"T"bolt (Fig 10/9) is fitted in the bottom box to retain the frame on the post.
Figure 11 shows a hazard warning light with a square section base (Fig 1/10) which can be slid into the hollow top of the post.
Figure 12 shows the signpost in the locked position with a sign frame and hazard warning lamp in position.

CLAIMS.
1 A one piece signpost for use on Tensioned Corrugated Barriers (TCB) and Untensioned Corrugated Barriers (UCB) which can be quickly, easily and securely fitted and removed.
2 A signpost as claimed in Claim 1 which locks onto TCB and UCB and needs no tools to fit or remove it.
3 A signpost as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 that will accept a variety of multi sign frameworks.
4 A signpost as claimed in Claim I and Claim 2 that will accept a hazard warning light in the hollow top of the post.
5 A signpost as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 3 which, because it is made of square box section, will allow the sign to face in any of four directions.
6 A signpost as claimed in Claim I and Claim 4 which will allow the hazard warning lamp to face in any of four directions.
7 A signpost as claimed in Claim I which can easily be converted into a more permanent post (Fig 4) to be bolted onto existing holes in the crash barrier.
8 A one piece temporary signpost substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-12 of the accompanying drawings.
