Abstract
A method for printing information stored in a portable information device of the type having a reflective display screen (1), a light sensor (2), a processing unit (3) and a memory (4) comprises instructing the processing unit (3) to list a plurality of pages of information stored in the memory (4), instructing the processing unit to display the first page of the list on the display screen (1), placing the portable information device onto the glass of a photocopier with the display screen facing the glass, instructing the photocopier to produce as many copies as there are pages of information in the list, and operating the photocopier to produce prints of said pages, the processing unit (3) being programmed so that the display of the second and subsequent pages of information in the list is triggered by the light sensor (2) detecting the previous passage of scanning light in the photocopier.
Description
Printing Method This invention relates to a method of printing information stored in a portable information device such as a mobile telephone, a personal digital assistant (PDA) or a calculator.
The present invention provides a method of printing information stored in a portable information device of the type having a reflective display screen, a processing unit and a memory, the method comprising the steps of instructing the processing unit to display a given page of information stored in the memory, placing the portable information device onto the glass of a photocopier with the display screen facing the glass, and operating the photocopier to produce a print of said page of information
The invention also provides a method of printing information stored in a portable information device of the type having a reflective display screen, a light sensor, a processing unit and a memory, the method comprising the steps of instructing the processing unit to list a plurality of pages of information stored in the memory, instructing the processing unit to display the first page of the list on the display screen, placing the portable information device onto the glass of a photocopier with the display screen facing the glass, instructing the photocopier to produce as many copies as there are pages of information in the list, and operating the photocopier to produce prints of said pages, wherein the processing unit is programmed so that the display of the second and subsequent pages of information in the list is triggered by the light sensor detecting the previous light emission in the photocopier.
This light emission may be the passage of scanning light, or a pulse of light emitted for imaging.
The invention further provides a portable information device comprising a reflective display screen, a light sensor, a processing unit and a memory, the processing unit being programmed to accept an instruction to list a plurality of pages of information stored in
its memory, to accept instructions to display the first page of the list on the display screen, and to display the second and subsequent pages of information in the list when the light sensor first and subsequently detects the passage of scanning light in a photocopier associated with the portable information device.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a schematic representation of a mobile telephone handset which can be used with a photocopier to produce hard copies of displayed information.
Referring to the drawing, a mobile telephone handset includes a reflective display (for example an LCD) screen 1, a light sensor 2, a processing unit 3, and a memory 4. The processing unit 3 is provided with dedicated software for controlling the display of different pages of information from the memory 4 on the screen 1. The dedicated software is such as to accept the output of the light sensor 2 to control the replacement of the display of a given page of information with the display of a different page of information.
In use, in order to obtain a hard copy of information contained in one or more of the pages of information stored in the memory 4, the handset is placed on the glass of a photocopier with its display screen 1 facing downwardly, the dedicated software in the handset having previously been programmed to display a given page of information.
The photocopier is then activated to provide a print-out of that page of information.
Where, as expected, hard copies are required of a plurality of pages of information, the light sensor 2, which senses the scanning light passing in the photocopier, triggers the dedicated software to display the next desired page of information. This process of light detection and display of new page information continues until all the desired pages have been printed. For example, if the information to be printed covers five pages of information, the photocopier would be set to produce five copies, and the light sensor 2 would trigger the display of the second to fifth pages of information upon detecting the first to fourth passages of the scanning light in the photocopier. The light sensor 2 may be arranged to detect either the onset of the scanning light or the turning off the
scanning light as scanning terminates. In the former case, the software will be such as to include a built-in time delay to permit the photocopier to complete a scan before the next page of information is displayed.
Although it is preferable for the display screen 1 to be flat, so it can be placed substantially in face-to-face contact with the glass of a photocopier, this is not essential.
Similarly, the method of the invention can be used with portable information devices such as a Psion PDA which cannot be placed flat on the glass of a photocopier because its display screen is prevented from face-to-face contact by the angle at which it lies to the keyboard of that device in the fully-open position.
Claims (3)
- Claims 1. A method of printing information stored in a portable information device of the type having a reflective display screen, a processing unit and a memory, the method comprising the steps of instructing the processing unit to display a given page of information stored in the memory, placing the portable information device onto the glass of a photocopier with the display screen facing the glass, and operating the photocopier to produce a print of said page of information.
- 2. A method of printing information stored in a portable information device of the type having a reflective display screen, a light sensor, a processing unit and a memory, the method comprising the steps of instructing the processing unit to list a plurality of pages of information stored in the memory, instructing the processing unit to display the first page of the list on the display screen, placing the portable information device onto the glass of a photocopier with the display screen facing the glass, instructing the photocopier to produce as many copies as there are pages of information in the list, and operating the photocopier to produce prints of said pages, wherein the processing unit is programmed so that the display of the second and subsequent pages of information in the list is triggered by the light sensor detecting the previous light emission in the photocopier.
- 3. A portable information device comprising a reflective display screen, a light sensor, a processing unit and a memory, the processing unit being programmed to accept an instruction to list a plurality of pages of information stored in its memory, to accept instructions to display the first page of the list on the display screen, and to display the second and subsequent pages of information in the list when the light sensor first and subsequently detects the light emission in a photocopier associated with the portable information device.
