Abstract
A platform lift suitable, although not exclusively, for the rear of a vehicle such as an ambulance 10 comprises a lift platform 24 which is horizontally hinged so that it can be stored in a vertical position so as to close an access opening (figure 1), but can be pivoted outwards to a second position in which the platform is accessible to allow a load such as a wheeled trolley to be moved onto the platform (figure 6), and can then be moved to a third position in which the platform engages the ground. The platform may be lowered horizontally to the ground or alternatively be pivoted so as to form a ramp (figure 7). The platform may include hand rails (30) and also a ramp extension (27) and wheel stop (29). When located at the rear of a vehicle the platform may be adjacent to a conventional vertically hinged door 13 which it engages with when in its stored upright position (figures 1 and 4b).
Description
DOOR LIFT PLATFORM ASSEMBLY
TECHNICAL FIELD
The invention relates to access apparatus and particularly, though not exclusively, to access apparatus to facilitate movement in and out of ambulances.
The invention provides access apparatus comprising an assembly that forms one of the rear doors of a vehicle. The invention apparatus comprises an assembly movable between a first, closed configuration, a second, access into the vehicle configuration in which a lift platform is accessible to receive and load or unload into the vehicle and a third position in which wheeled transport can be loaded or unloaded at ground level. A fourth position is also achievable in which the apparatus forms a ramp.
Movement between the second and third position is controlled by a cantilever type lift mechanism.
DESCRIPTION
When the access apparatus is incorporated in an ambulance, for example, it enables personnel, when using the first configuration, to gain access into the vehicle by foot via a vertically hinged rear door. This door may be used in conjunction with a drop down or automatic step to aid access into the vehicle on foot. The lift platform assembly can then be moved into the second position in which the platform is accessible, wheeled transport, for example a trolley cot, can be unloaded/loaded at vehicle interior floor level onto the platform. Finally the assembly can then be moved to a third position in which the platform is accessible at ground level, wheeled transport, for example trolley cot, can be unloaded/loaded from the platform at ground level. The platform may also be tilted to form an angled access ramp.
The lift platform may be made accessible by pivoting the lift platform from a closed position to an access position in which the lift platform is a continuation of the vehicle floor level.
The lift platform may pivot out of a door aperture stowage space, the space being shaped such that when the lift platform is in the access position, the lift platform cooperates with the interior floor level of the vehicle to allow level access onto the lift platform.
The lift platform may be made accessible by pivoting the lift platform from a closed position to an access position.
The lift platform may replace a standard vertically hinged type rear door.
The lift platform may seal to the door aperture or jamb of the vehicle to prevent ingress of fumes or water.
The lift platform may further comprise a lift platform extension means. The lift platform extension means may be made accessible by pivoting the lift platform extension means from a closed position to an access position.
The lift platform extension means may incorporate a wheel stop device to prevent wheeled transport, for example a trolley cot, from rolling off the end of the lift platform.
The lift platform extension means may pivot out of a lift platform extension means stowage space.
The device to prevent wheeled transport from rolling off the lift platform may be housed within the ramp such that when the lift platform is in its closed position, the lift platform can be sealed against the door aperture to prevent the ingress of exhaust fumes and fluids from the exterior of the vehicle.
The lift platform may further comprise handrails. The lift handrails may be made accessible by pivoting the handrails from a closed position to an access position.
The lift platform may further comprise a door aperture seal. The door aperture seal may be made to accept a standard type vertically hinged door. The door aperture seal may be used to prevent he ingress into the vehicle of fumes or water.
The door aperture may be used to secure a standard type vertically hinged door in a locked position.
The movements of the lift platform between the first, second, third and fourth position may be power operated, for example by means of a cantilever lift mechanism.
The lift mechanism may be hydraulically controlled.
The invention includes an access structure fitted with access apparatus according to the invention.
The access structure may comprise a vehicle.
The vehicle may comprise an ambulance.
One embodiment of access apparatus according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :

DESCRIPTION
In the closed configuration shown in Figure 1, access apparatus forming the subject of this embodiment provide a rear face 11 which is a continuation of the rear face 12 of the vehicle. Thus in this configuration the standard vertically hinged rear door 13 of the ambulance can be closed or opened (see Figure 3) and the rear step 14 can be used normally for access of patients and ambulance personnel.
When the ambulance is stationary, with the standard vertically hinged rear door 13 opened (see figure 2), ambulance personnel may need to exit or enter the ambulance rapidly from the rear of the vehicle, for example to carry medical equipment out of the ambulance or back into the ambulance.
To facilitate this, the access apparatus incorporates a step 14 (see Figure 3).
In the lower configuration (see Figure 3), the step comprises a vertical section 15 and a horizontal section 16, suitably connected together by brackets 17.
The step pivots downwardly to reach the configuration shown in Figure 3 but in the stored configuration shown in Figure 2, the step lies between side frame members 18 and 19. The rectangular space between these frame members 18 and 19, which houses the step in the stored configuration, has its own horizontal section 20 and vertical section 21 such that when the step 14 is lowered, there is actually a double step giving easy access between ground level and the floor of the ambulance.
In different circumstances, the ambulance personnel may wish to unload or load a patient trolley and the access apparatus of this embodiment is able to cope with this situation also.
The a lift platform section 11, which is housed between the vertically hinged rear door 13 and the side frame member 21, can be pivoted downwardly into the position shown in Figure 5. An intermediate pivoting position is shown in Figure 4 and it can be seen from Figure 4 that as the lift platform 11 pivots downwardly, the step 14 can either remain in a closed position (see Figure 2) or can be opened position (see
Figure 5).
The area between the lift platform surface 24 and the interior floor of the ambulance body 23 combine to form a continuous level surface as shown in Figure 6, giving easy access to the lift platform 24.
When wheeled transport is loaded onto the lift platform 11 the lift can be lowered to ground level (see Figure 8).
It may also be possible to load or unload wheeled transport using the lift platform as an access ramp (see Figure 8a).
The mechanism to lower the platform can be a hydraulic cantilever type lift mechanism or other apparatus that provide the appropriate control of the lift platform.
In certain circumstances it may be necessary for ambulance personnel to be on the lift platform surface 24 when lowering or raising the lift platform.
In order protect operators from the lift mechanism a safety kick plate 25 may be provided. The safety kick plate is hinged on the forward end of the lift platform surface 26. The kick plate slides over the surface of the interior floor of the ambulance when the lift platform 11 is in the closed position (see figure 2). When the lift platform is in the lowered position the safety kick plate 25 pivots to a near vertical position at point 26, and covers the lift mechanism thus covering the gap between lift platform surface 24 and the floor of the ambulance body 23.
To allow for varying lengths of wheeled transport that may be used on the lift platform, the lift platform may comprise an additional extension means 27 (see
Figures 9a-9d).
The lift platform extension means may be made accessible by pivoting the ramp extension means at point 28 from a closed position (see Figure 9a) to an access position (see Figure 9c). An intermediate stage can be seen in Figure 9b.
Furthermore the lift platform or the lift platform extension means may incorporate a wheel stop device 29 (see Figures 9c-9e).
The wheel stop device is designed to prevent wheeled transport, for example a trolley cot, from rolling off the end of the lift platform.
The wheel stop device may be made accessible by pivoting the wheel stop device at point 33 from a closed position (see Figure 9c) to an access position (see Figure 9d).
A side view of the wheel stop device can be seen in Figure 9e.
The wheel stop device may be released by a release lever 32.
The wheel stop device may pivot out of either the lift platform surface 24 or from the ramp extension 27.
To provide additional safety for operators using the lift platform, the apparatus may incorporate safety handrails 30 (see Figure 7). The handles may fold down level with the lift platform surface 24 (see Figure 5) when the lift mechanism is not in use.
The access apparatus described above can readily be incorporated into new ambulances during manufacture or alternatively it can be fitted subsequently to existing ambulances.
When the lift platform is not in use, it maybe locked in position by pressure from the hydraulic cantilever lift mechanism or by a locking mechanism.
Control of the lift platform may be operated electrically by switch means or remote control means, which may be hand held.
The control means may incorporate a four button control button system. The first button may control the tilt of the platform from a closed position (see Figure 3) to an access position (see Figure 7). An intermediary position can be seen in Figure 4. The second button may control the lowering of the lift platform from a position level with the interior floor of the ambulance (see Figure 7) to a position level with ground (see
Figure 8). The third button may control the raising of the lift platform from a position level with ground (see Figure 8) to the interior floor level of the ambulance (see
Figure 7). A fourth button may control the tilt of the platform from an access position (see Figure 7) to a closed position (see Figure 3). An intermediary position can be seen in Figure 4.
The area between the vertically hinged rear door and the lift platform may incorporate a door jamb or seal 31 (see Figure 4a & 4b). The door seal is designed to provide a weather and fume seal when the lift platform 11 and the vertically hinged rear door 13 are in the closed position.
All of the features disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abstract and drawings), and/or all of the steps of any method or process so disclosed, may be combined in any combination, except combinations where at least some of such features and/or steps are mutually exclusive.
