Abstract

A reduced friction drum tuning mechanism comprises a base unit, formed by an outer location ring 1 and a bridging ring 3, which fits inside the drum shell and forms a lip over the edge of the drum shell, a drum head support ring 2 over which the drum skin is stretched and a tuning ring 6 which threadably engages the outer location ring 1. Tuning is effected by turning the tuning ring 6 around the circumference of the drum to tighten the drumhead 5 over the drum head support ring 2. Bearings 9 are provided to reduce friction between some of the moving parts. An aperture 8 into which the end of a drum stick 7 can be inserted for use as a lever is provided in the tuning ring 6, allowing more accurate force to be brought to bear on the tuning ring. An outer decorative ring 4 on which the drum maker's logo might be included is also provided around the outer edge of the drum. Drum heads having different profiles may be used to produce different tones.

Description

Improved lightweight drum tuning mechanism This invention relates to an improved version of the lightweight drum tuning mechanism to be known externally as"Hummdrum". The original version of this design (Patent number 9908566.4) was published in October 2000.
This invention seeks to improve and refine the earlier Drum tuning mechanism to give significant extra claims over the previous design. The intention within this invention is sometimes to complement and other times to improve the original invention to give an overall improved way of tuning The inventor of this new design Milan Vujovic is also the inventor of the previous method. As advised by the patent office, where relevant the descriptions of the new invention may also refer to the previous design and patent.
The uniqueness of this new invention is that the standard size drumhead is stretched over the Hummdrum frictionless rotating drum support ring within standard sized drum bodies.
Additionally, as in the previous invention, this improved design uses no keys of any sort.
To overcome the friction encountered in the previous design, this design incorporates a bearing to allow frictionless turning of the drumhead. It should be noted that the previous design enabled the drumhead to be tightened by turning the drumhead rather as you would do a jam jar lid. This design also uses that principle but the process is now frictionless. To further assist the improved tuning method holes have been made in the tuning ring which allow a drum stick end to be inserted thus allowing better and more accurate leverage to be applied.
In this design parts 1 and 2 (Inner and Outer rings) are combined to create a tuning mechanism base unit. The bridging ring (part 3) performs the function of keeping the 2 parts together. Part 4 is a decorative ring which allows the Drum maker's name or logo to be displayed. The standard drumhead (part 5) is positioned on top of these two and then the tuning ring (Part6) is screwed down thus tightening the drumhead over the frictionless"Hummdrum"rotating drumhead support. A drumstick (Part 7) can be inserted in an aperture on the ring (Part8) to give more accurate leverage if required.
The bearing is part 9.
A specific embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of an example to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure 1 shows the improved drum tuning mechanism in section from both sides describing and annotating on the same diagram the separate pieces which comprise the invention.
The method of tuning the drumhead is as before by turning the mechanism either by hand or, as added in this invention, by the use of a drumstick end to provide extra and more accurate leverage.
The parts comprising this invention are annotated in the drawing figure as follows.
Parts 1, 2,3 and 4 comprise the inner tuning mechanism base unit. This incorporates the half of the tuning mechanism which stays in the drum body and is seldom likely to be moved. Part 5 is the standard sized drumhead and part 6 is the drumhead tuning ring. Part 7 is the drumstick and part 8 is the drumstick aperture.
Part 9 is the bearing.

Claims (5)

Claims.
1. A frictionless drumhead tuning mechanism which uses standard sized drum heads and bodies.
2. An improved drum tuning mechanism as claimed in 1 which uses a drumstick and drumstick aperture to improve extra and more accurate leverage.
3. A drumhead tuning as claimed in 1 and 2 where different profiles of the drum support ring can be supplied to provide different drum tones.
4. A drumhead tuning mechanism as claimed in 1,2 and 3 which incorporates a bearing to eliminate friction when tightening or loosening the drumhead.
5. A drumhead tuning mechanism in which one of the parts (the decorative outer ring part 4) can be customised to show the drum maker's name.
