Abstract

A cup-carrier formed from a single sheet of material comprises a generally flat base (2), a pair of upright side walls (3) extending upwardly from opposite sides of the base and a pair of cover walls (5) extending generally inwardly towards each other from the upper edges of the side walls to form a cover spaced above the base. A pair of handle panels (7) extend upwardly from the inner edges of the cover walls (5) and are adapted to engage one another to form a carrying handle. The side walls (3) are formed with upper and lower apertures (13, 14) for receiving and supporting outer circumferential portions of cups held in the cup-carrier.

Description

CUP-CARRIER
This invention relates to a cup-carrier for carrying one or more cups.
Hot beverages are regularly bought in paper or plastic cups with push on lids.
Carrying one or more such cups without spilling the contents can be tricky. The present invention aims to provide a cup-carrier for carrying one or more cups which can be formed by folding a single sheet of material without gluing.
Accordingly, the invention provides a cup-carrier formed from a single sheet of material without gluing comprising: a generally flat base; a pair of upright side walls extending upwardly from opposite side edges of the base; a pair of cover walls extending generally inwardly towards each other from the upper edges of the side walls to form a cover spaced above the base; and a pair of handle panels extending upwardly from the inner edges of the cover walls and adapted to engage one another to form a carrying handle.
Embodiments of the invention are described below, with reference to the accompany drawings, in which: Figure I shows a flat blank for forming a cup-carrier; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a cup-carrier; and Figure 3 is an end view of a cup-carrier with a cup shown in phantom.
The blank 1 shown in Figure 1 is generally rectangular and may be made of card,
plastic or other thin sheet material. The blank is roughly symmetrical about a central section which forms the base 2 of the cup-carrier.
A pair of upright side walls 3 extend from the opposite side edges of the base and are connected thereto through crease lines 4. The side walls extend upwardly when the cup-carrier is formed.
A pair of cover walls 5 extend from the upper edges of the side walls and are connected thereto through crease lines 6. The cover walls 5 extend inwardly from the upper edges of the side walls when the cup-carrier is formed to form a cover spaced above the base 2.
A pair of handle panels 7 extend from the inner edges of the cover walls 5 and are connected thereto through crease lines 8. The handle panels are formed with co-operating inter-engaging elements in the form of cut-outs 9,10 and flaps 11,12. When the cup-carrier is formed, the panels 7 extend upwardly alongside one another and the flaps 11,12 are pushed through the cut-outs 9,10 respectively so that the panels 7 engage one another to form a carrying handle.
The side walls 3 are formed with apertures 13,14 for receiving outer circumferential portions of a cup C shown in phantom in Figure 3 and comprising a body and a lid. The apertures comprise lower apertures 13 which extend upwardly from the lower edge of each side wall 3 and upper apertures 14 located in the side walls above the lower apertures 13.
The lower apertures reduce in width as they extend upwardly and are formed by a lower part-circular portion 15 and an upper pointed portion 16 which is generally triangular but with gently curved sides. The upper apertures 14 are generally rectangular.
The embodiment shown is for carrying two cups and is thus provided with two lower apertures 13 and two upper apertures 14 in each side wall 3. As can be seen in Figure 3, lower outer circumferential parts of the body of the cup C extend into and are supported in the lower apertures 13 whilst outer circumferential parts of the lid of the cup C extend into and are supported in the upper apertures 14.
Part circular extensions 17 protrude from the side edges of the base 3 in the region of each lower aperture 13 to assist in supporting and locating the base of the cup C.
The crease lines 6 are formed with slits (not shown) to assist in folding the blank to shape.

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A cup-carrier formed from a single sheet of material without gluing comprising: a generally flat base; a pair of upright side walls extending upwardly from opposite side edges of the base; a pair of cover walls extending generally inwardly towards each other from the upper edges of the side walls to form a cover spaced above the base; and a pair of panel elements extending upwardly from the inner edges of the cover walls and adapted to engage one another to form a carrying handle.
  2. 2. A cup-carrier as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the handle panels are formed with inter-engaging elements in the form of cut-outs and flaps.
  3. 3. A cup-carrier as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the side walls are formed with apertures for receiving and supporting outer circumferential portions of a cup held within the cup-carrier.
  4. 4. A cup-carrier as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the apertures comprise lower apertures extending upwardly from the lower edge of each side wall and reducing width upwardly and upper apertures of generally constant width located in the side walls above each of the lower apertures.
  5. 5. A cup-carrier as claimed in Claim 4, wherein each side wall is formed with two lower apertures and two upper apertures such that the cup-carrier can support two cups.
  6. 6. A cup-carrier substantially as described herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
