Abstract

A de-odourising device 20 is mounted to the inside of a refuse bin 10 and comprises a pump-action dispenser having an actuating plunger 46 arranged to be depressed upon closure of the lid 12 of the bin 10, so that a quantity of de-odourising liquid is released upon either opening or closing the lid. The body of the device may be formed with a recess to receive a cartridge (30, Fig. 3) containing the de-odourising liquid. An inlet tube (44, Fig. 3) may be arranged to pierce and extend into the cartridge (30, Fig. 3). The dispenser 20 may be withdrawn to enable the cartridge to be removed and replaced.

Description

DE-ODOURISING DEVICE
The present invention relates to a de-odourising device for refuse bins and is particularly, but not solely, applicable to domestic refuse bins.
Refuse bins can often give rise to unpleasant odours.
I have now devised a simple device for alleviating this problem.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a de-odourising device mounted or for mounting to the inside of a refuse bin, the device comprising a pump-action dispenser having an actuating plunger which is arranged to be depressed upon closure of the lid of the refuse bin, the dispenser serving to dispense a quantity of de-odourising liquid upon either closing or opening the lid.
Accordingly, in use, the device is actuated each time the lid of the refuse bin is closed, in order to dispense a quantity of de-odourising liquid into the bin. This scented liquid may include an insecticide.
Preferably the device comprises a body for mounting to the inside surface of a wall of the refuse bin. Preferably this body is formed with a recess for receiving a vessel containing the de-odourising liquid : preferably the vessel comprises a cartridge and the recess is arranged for the cartridge to be inserted by sliding in from a side of the device.
Preferably the pump-action dispenser is mounted in a passage formed through an upper portion of the body of the device.
Preferably the dispenser comprises an inlet tube which extends into the cartridge: the dispenser is withdrawn to enable an empty cartridge to be removed and replaced with a full cartridge, and is then inserted; preferably the inlet tube of the dispenser is arranged to pierce the top of the cartridge.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be
described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a domestic refuse bin fitted with a de-odourising device in accordance with the invention; FIGURE 2 is an enlarged isometric view of the deodourising device; FIGURE 3 is a similar view of the device with its pumpaction dispenser and its cartridge of de-odourising liquid removed; FIGURE 4 is a front view of the device with cartridge removed; and FIGURE 5 is a side view of the device with cartridge removed.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a domestic refuse bin 10 having a lid 12 pivoted to its top, rear edge. A deodourising device 20 in accordance with the present invention is mounted to the inside surface of the rear wall of the bin 10, adjacent the top of the bin: the arrangement is such that, as the lid 12 is closed, it will depress a plunger 46 of a pump-action dispenser 40 of the de-odourising device, to spray a quantity of de-odourising liquid into the bin.
As shown in Figures 2 to 5, the de-odourising device 20 comprises a body in the form of a flat plate 22 having supports 24,26 projecting forwardly at its top and bottom. Lugs 28 project outwardly from the side edges of the plate portion 22 and are apertured to enable the device to be mounted to the rear wall of the refuse bin 10 by means of bolts, screws or other fasteners. The plate portion 22 and supports 24,26 define, between them, a recess for receiving and retaining a cartridge 30 (Figure 3) containing de-odourising liquid. The underside surface of the upper support 24 is inclined downwardly, whilst the upper side of the lower support 26 is inclined upwardly, towards the front of the device: the top and bottom of the cartridge 30 are correspondingly orientated, such
that the vertical cross-sectional shape and size of the cartridge are complementary to those of the recess which is to receive it. As shown in Figure 3, the cartridge 30 is inserted into the recess by sliding in from either side of the device, once the dispenser 40 is removed.
The dispenser 40 is mounted through a passage 25 formed in the upper support 24 of the device. The dispenser comprises a tubular body 42 which engages in the aperture 25, and an extension tube 44 which is pointed at its lower end. A plunger 46 is suitably mounted on the body 42 and is formed with a head 48 at is upper end and also with a forwardly-directed outlet nozzle 50.
Referring to Figure 3, once the cartridge 30 is inserted into the device, the dispenser 40 is inserted through the passage 25 in the upper support 24: in so doing, the pointed end of the dispenser tube 44 pierces the foil top of the cartridge 30, enters the cartridge and reaches a point adjacent the bottom of the interior of the cartridge.
In use, as the lid 12 of the refuse bin is closed, the lid bears on the head 48 of the plunger 46 of the dispenser, so depressing the plunger against a bias spring thereof. The dispenser is of pump-action type, such that depression of the plunger causes a quantity of the de-odourising liquid to be dispensed into the refuse bin via the outlet nozzle 50.
Subsequent opening of the lid causes the dispenser to re-load, drawing up a quantity of the de-odourising liquid ready for the next dispensing phase.
It will be appreciated that the device which has been described is of simple construction yet effective in use.
