Abstract

237,094. Batten, J. D. July 16, 1924. Ornithopters; propelling; land wheels and skid.s.-The main spars of a Rapping wing machine are assisted on the downstroke by the resilience of twisted skeins of silk hemp, steel bands or other tensile substance. The main wing spars d are connected by cords to ausiliax‹y spars c and both main and auxiliary spars are passed through crossed tubes s at the centres of the twisted skeins which are secured to the framework by similar cross-heads q and tensioning bolts. The inner ends of the spars d are connected to vertical rods f guided by pivoted links g. Crossed members h pivoted to one another at j and to the rods f at j are guided at their lower ends by rollers, k engaging the rods f. The pivots j support a saddle for the pilot who grasps hand rails m on the rods f, shoulder straps, not shown, also being connected to the rods m. The main spars are strengthened at their pivots by sheaths. The downstroke of the wings is effected by the pilot pressing his feet against a platform l on the main frame, and the upstroke is effected by allowing his weight to come on the saddle. Small wheels are carried on levers 111 which engage hooks o on the rods f as the machine alights in order to raise the wings. Main landing wheels p and a tail skid are provided. Specification 209,807 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes a wing spar acted upon by a single twisted skein.
