Pianoforte actions. -In an upright action, a two-armed spring is arranged in such a way that its action is .reversed during actuation of the hammer. The spring 2, Fig. 1, is secured bv a coil at its middle to the hammer-butt 4, and by its end 6 secured at 7 it normally presses the hammer away from the spring. On depression of the key, however, the end 9 of the spring passes on to the check 11, Fig. 2, shaped as shown, thus assisting to support the hammer close to the spring. On release of the key, the hammer is thrown upwards bv the spring, so that the jack 12 readily regains its position under the notch. Either end of the spring may be formed as a hook, so that the spring may be fastened together like a safety-pin anrl put out of use. The fall of the wippen is assisted by a spring 15 secured to the wippenflange at 16 and either to the jack at 19 or to the wippen. The damper is actuated by a rigid wooden arm 20 on the wippen contacting with a regulating-button 30 on the damper-tail. The damper-rods 25 may be in connected pieces. Two flat wooden or metal rails 21, 22 joined in T-form may carry the action-rails 23, 24 which are covered with emery-cloth or sand-paper. The damper lifter-rod 29 is mounted on arms 34 pivoted at 33 in alignment with the damper-rod pivots, and is actuated by members 35, 36 connected direct to the right pedal. The hammer rest-rail 8 may be mounted on arms pivoted in alignment with the hammer-pivots. Specifications 21767/94, 8391/96, 29617/04, and 13727/06 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the spring 2 may be mounted on a separate rail, or one end may press on the jack.
