Abstract
A communication means comprises an amplifier unit 1, microphone(s) 8, speakers 10 and associated wiring 3-6. It is particularly adapted for use in a motor-vehicle allowing communication from front-seat to rear-seat occupants using pre-existing speakers such as those of an in-car entertainment system. Preferably circuitry 9 is provided to prevent interference with other local radio apparatus. Preferably volume control 7 is provided. Preferably the communication system uses a voltage already supplied in the electrical systems of the vehicle. One embodiment uses a signal 5 from a car radio, normally used to extend an aerial, to signal the communication system to switch off, though a manual switch may also be provided.
Description
IN-CAR VOICE AMPLIFIER
This invention relates to an amplifier with microphone, volume control and associated wiring for use in motor vehicles to facilitate improved and safer communication from driver and front-seat passenger to rear-seat passengers, utilising the vehicles existing rear speakers.
Despite all the technological improvements to the modem motor vehicle a particular problem remains. The driver and front-seat passenger invariably have to turn their heads through 900 ion order to communicate with the rear-seat passengers.
To the front-seat passenger this is nothing more than an inconvenience, but to the driver it is a safety hazard as his/her attention is distracted. This is especially so for a parent trying to talk to children in the rear seats whilst maintaining safe control of the vehicle.
The reasons for this problem are; 1) Driver and passenger are forward facing.
2) High-backed seats with head restraints restrict the passage of sound waves.
3) Use of soft furnishings throughout the vehicle absorbs sound waves.
4) Road noise.
5) Airconditioning and heater noise.
6) Wind noise.
The invention is designed to overcome this problem. It can be fitted to all new vehicles, and retrofitted to most vehicles currently in use.
For an understanding of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the amplifier with microphone and associated wiring.
Figure 2 shows in schematic, the building blocks of the invention.
IN-CAR VOICE AMPLIFIER
Referring to the drawings, the electronics are housed on one or more printed-circuit boards 11 within box 1. Power from the vehicles battery (positive) is supplied on lead 2 which also has fuse 3 provided. Return (negative or earth) is on lead 4. Microphone 8 has sufficient cable length to enable it to be discreetly attached to the rear-view mirror, sun visor or any other suitable position. Output to the vehicles existing rear speakers 10 is provided by cables 6. During installation volume can be preset at 7.
It is desirable to have the amplifier switched off when the vehicles radio is in use. For this purpose relay or electronic switch 9 is provided to be automatically operated when the radio is switched on. Most modem vehicle radios are provided with an additional wire to operate an electric aerial when the radio is switched on, connection into this wire by lead 5 will de-power the amplifier. If this facility is not available manual switching of the power supply on lead 2 will be provided.
