Abstract
A screw head (101) has a chamber (103) with a slot (104) for receiving the blade of a driver tool (i.e. screwdriver). The chamber (103) is shaped so that the blade is positively locked within the chamber (103).
Description
SCREW HEAD The present invention relates to screws and set screws.
Conventional screws and certain set screws have heads which incorporate a single transverse slot into which a screw driver is fitted to turn the screw.
Other screws have heads which incorporate a tapering depression the crosssection of which is a cross. Such screws and set screws suffer from the disadvantage that the amount of torque which can be applied to the head of the screw or set screw is limited. This is true particularly in the case of round or dome-headed screws where the head is thinnest at the edges where the torque forces are largest.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved head for a screw or set screw.
According to the present invention, there is provided a screw or set screw having a head portion and a screw-threaded stem wherein the head of the screw or set screw includes a chamber having an orifice through which a driver blade can be inserted, the chamber being so shaped that on rotation of the driver blade the driver blade is locked positively within the said chamber and engages with bearing surfaces included therein.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a plan and cross-sectional view of an embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a screw 100 has a head portion 101 and a screwthreaded tapering stem portion 102 in the conventional manner.
Formed in the head 101 of the screw 100 there is a chamber 103 which has an entrance slot 104 through which an appropriately shaped screw driver blade (not shown in the drawing) can be inserted. The chamber 103 in the head 101 of the screw 100 is bi-lobate in form and provides two pairs of bearing surfaces 105,106, respectively. The pair of bearing surface 105 enables torque to be applied to the screw in a clockwise direction and the pair of bearing surfaces 106 enables torque to be applied to the screws in a counter clockwise direction.
In use, a screw drier with a T-shaped blade of an appropriate size is inserted into the chamber 103 in the head 101 of the screw 100 through the slot 104. Initial rotation of the screw driver blade causes it to be locked within chamber 103 in the head 101 of the screw 100. Further rotation of the screw driver blade causes it to bear on one or other of the pairs of bearing surfaces 105,106 and turn the screw in the appropriate direction.
As the screw driver blade is locked within the chamber 103 in the head 101 of the screw 100 and the bearing surfaces 105,106 have almost the whole radial thickness of the head 101 of the screw 100 backing them, considerably more torque can be applied to the screw 100 than is possible with conventional screws.
The same principle can be applied to screws and engineering set screws which have parallel-sided stems.
Claims (5)
- CLAIMS 1. A screw or set screw having a head portion and a screw-threaded stem wherein the head of the screw or set screw includes a chamber having an orifice through which a driver blade can be inserted, the chamber being so shaped that on rotation of the drive blade, the driver blade is locked positively within the said chamber and engages with bearing surfaces included therein.
- 2. A screw or set scrw according to Claim 1 wherein the orifice comprises a transverse slot.
- 3. A screw or set screw according to Claim 1 wherein the chamber is bi-lobate in plan.
- 4. A screw driver the end of the blade of which is adapted to co-operate with the orifice and chamber of a screw or set screw according to any preceding claim.
- 5. A screw or set screw substantially or hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
