Abstract

A one piece hot air staking device comprises a hot air supply 17 directed onto the stud 12 and cold forming tool 8 mounted within the tool body 2. The form tool will form the malleable stud into a fastening and hold until firm. The stud may take the image of the tool which may be variable and interchangeable. A pneumatic cylinder 1 may be provided to actuate the form tool which may be attached to cylinder rod 3 by tool guide 6 and adjustable locknut 5. The hot air may be delivered through tube 16 which may be insulated 15. The delivery shroud 11 may distribute the hot air around the stake. The form tool 8 may be kept cool by fins 7, the venturi action at 13 which may draw fresh air in through holes 9 and reduced body wall thickness at 14 to minimise heat transfer.

Description

Description Smote Hot Air Stake Forming Device Background of the Invention.
The device relates to a Hot Staking technique for the joining together of one or more pieces of thermoplastic material by the application of super hot air onto a stake, stud, stem, rib, annular roll-over or insert presented in any bifurcated, cored, solid or other form and size. Super hot air is directed onto the specific area of an assembly in a controlled and precise manner then this section of the assembly is re-formed by a pressured clamp/pin (stake) to create a secure rivet type joint or seal.
Operation and Timing sequence of the Tool 1. Tool locally positioned above object for staking and held in place.
2. Pressurised hot air allowed to flow for a pre-determined time and directed onto the item being formed.
3. Pressurised air paused and forming tool activated to re-form the heated item.
4. Forming tool held in place on the item until material solidifies and parts consolidate.
5. Forming tool returns to start position cool area to commence cycle again.
Introduction to the Drawing.
Referring to Figure 1 the tool is essentially a one-piece device requiring the external services of compressed air and electrical energy for the operation of the pneumatics forming pin and the generation of super hot air for softening of the object respectively.
The tool body (2) supports a pneumatic forming cylinder (1) located in the upper body (4) and is of variable size, the cylinder is operated by compressed air supply or an electrical mechanism. From forming cylinder (1) a forming cylinder rod (3) is activated and is infinitely variable by means of an adjustable locknut or sleeve (5) with a tool guide (6) attached.
Within the lower forming tool body (18) the forming tool (8) is housed, activated, moved and held in the forming position (12) by the tool guide (6). The end of the forming guide (8) will mirror the finished and formed shape of the stake, stud, stem, rib, annular roll over or insert presented in any bifurcated, cored, solid or other form and size (12).
Pressurised hot air (17) continuous or variable is delivered to the processing area (12) through a hot air delivery tube (16), the tube is heat insulated with a resistant material (15). From the hot air delivery tube (16) the air (17) is distributed around at the lower body area (10) and is covered by a hot air delivery shroud (11) the air then exiting at the stake forming area (12).
Continuous cooling of the forming tool (8) is achieved by upper body cooling fins (7) and by an annular venturi action at (13) of the hot air. This action will draw cool air through a cooling band with offset holes or slots for slow heat transfer (9). Additionally the lower body wall thickness is reduced to minimise heat transfer from the lower to upper body (14).

Claims (1)

  1. Claims and Essential Features of the Invention.
    A"one piece"press tool mechanism utilizing super hot air and a cold staking pin for re-forming plasticised material to create a fastening stud or weld. Super hot air is directed locally in a controlled manner and at a constant temperature to the area for re-forming, then at a precise time when the material is malleable it is re-formed and held by a stake pin/clamp until firm and them released. The reformation will take the image of the stake pin/clamp and can be variable and interchangeable. Integral to the tool is the delivery of super hot air to the stud or weld and the airflow cooling mechanism for the forming stake pin/clamp, this will provide consistency and repeatability of the deformed stud or weld.
