Abstract

An absorbent pad comprising a high polymer absorber (1), a hydrophilic surface layer (2) and a leak-proof base (3), wherein each lateral side of the high polymer absorber is preferably folded downwards to give a lower layer of the pad and an internal channel (13) is formed in the lower layer of the pad, extending longitudinally. A protection wall A may also be provided at each lateral side of the pad by a respective upwards fold. The absorbent pad is ideal for use in sanitary towels, baby and adult diapers, urine pads or nursing pads due to its capability to divert the direction of liquid diffusion and its leak prevention properties.

Description

2366518 HIGH POLYMER ABSORBENT PAD The present invention relates to a
design of a high polymer absorbent pad with an internal channel. More 5 particularly, the present invention relates to such a pad incorporated in a sanitary towel, a child's or adult's diaper, or a nursing pad.
To prevent menses or urine from contaminating the clothes/underwear, absorbent pads are available for women, 10 babies and people suffering from continence problems. Conventional high polymer absorbent pads used in sanitary towels, diapers or nursing pads are poor at preventing side leaks since they are usually designed as narrow strips to fit the crotch. While engaging in physical activities such 15 as jogging or other exercises, or in case of heavy menstruation, or urination as the case may be, menses or urine could rapidly diffuse to both sides of the towel, diaper or pad 10 as illustrated in Figure 1. This may result in an awkward situation or in contaminated clothes.
20 This can be a tremendous burden, both mentally and physically, on the wearer. Therefore, leak-proof sides 100 (Figure 2) are provided in the hope of stopping diffusion of menses or urine.
However, the effectiveness of the leak-proof sides 100 25 of the pads of the prior art is still very limited, as shown in Figure 3. The high polymer absorbent pads of the prior art sanitary towel, diaper or nursing pad is made by the falling dust method. The leak-proof side 100 comprises
2 a layer of absorbent non-woven cloth, as illustrated in Figure 2, pressed tightly against the skin. Furthermore, the prior art sanitary towel has channels provided on its surface to guide the menses away from seeping to both
5 sides. However, these channels are provided on the surface. The channels therefore cause discomfort to the wearer, and the menses could easily flow out of said channels and onto the inner thighs, particularly during sleep.
10 The present invention provides a high polymer absorbent pad, comprising a high polymer absorber which is folded into two layers with the lower layer defining an internal channel in the pad, and wherein each lateral side of the pad is folded into protection walls.
15 The present invention will prevent the menses or urine from seeping to the inner thighs of the wearer, and improve protection against side leaks over the pads of the prior art.
A first purpose of the present invention is to provide 20 a high polymer absorbent pad with an internal channel, for use in sanitary towels, child and adult diapers, and nursing pads. The internal channel in the lower layer is for diversion of menses or urine absorbed to lengthways diffusion. The upper layer is provided to prevent back 25 permeation. Each side of the absorbent pad is folded to form a protection wall to improve the side leak-proof effect of the product. The pad may have a saddle shape.
Another purpose of the present invention is to provide 3 a high polymer absorbent pad with an internal channel wherein a leak- proof layer may be provided at the base of the pad to prevent menses or urine from seeping outward. An additional layer of hydrophilic non-woven fabric may be 5 provided on the surface of said pad for comport.
Another purpose of the present invention is to provide a high polymer absorbent pad with an internal channel, wherein elastic folded sides are provided to improve coverage and practical benefits.

10 Figure 12 is a schematic view of a preferred embodiment of a pad of the present invention in the form of a diaper.
Figure 13 is a schematic view of a preferred embodiment of a pad of the present invention in the form of 15 a nursing pad.
Referring to Figure 4, the present invention of a high polymer absorbent pad with an internal channel is essentially comprised of a high polymer absorber 1, a hydrophilic surface layer 2 and a leak-proof base 3. The 20 high polymer absorbent pad may be of a conventional absorber with built-in high polymer absorbent particles, or of a hydrophilic cotton or non-woven fabric pad, or any other equivalent. Both sides of said high polymer absorber 1 of the present invention are respectively folded inward 25 towards the centre portion of the pad. This gives the high polymer absorbent pad a structure including an upper layer 11, and a lower layer 12. Furthermore, by means of such structure, internal channel 13 is provided axially extending in the lower layer 12.
The hydrophilic surface layer 2 may be of conventional absorbent nonwoven fabric or its equivalent. The leakproof base 3 is comprised of a non-permeable non-woven 5 fabric with its outer surface bonded to a plastic layer.
The leak-proof base 3 and the hydrophilic surface layer 2 are respectively provided above and below the surface of the high polymer absorbent pad. The leak-proof base 3 and the hydrophilic surface layer 2 are bonded by 10 pressing at their edges. This gives a structure wherein the high polymer absorbent pad is wrapped by the leak-proof base 3 and the hydrophilic surface layer 2. Each side of the structure is respectively folded up towards the inside to form a protection wall A.
15 If heavy menstruation or urination is absorbed, the internal channel 13 axially extending in the lower layer 12 creates a capillarity, and the menses or urine axially.
diffuse along the internal channel 13, and slowly diffuse towards both sides of the pad, as illustrated in Figure 5.
20 Since most of the menses or urine have been already longitudinally absorbed, only a small portion of said menses or urine diffuses towards the sides of the pad. The range of the lateral diffusion observed in the pads of the present invention (as illustrated in Figure 5) is smaller 25 than that observed in the pads of the prior art (as illustrated in Figure 1). The present invention is therefore capable of preventing side leakage more efficiently. Furthermore, since the internal channel 13 of
6 the present invention is located in the lower layer 12 of the pad, it can effectively confine the menses or urine in the lower layer 12. The upper layer 11 of the pad closely fits against the skin to prevent seepage of the menses or 5 urine to the inner thighs while it also prevents back permeation of the menses or urine from the internal channel 13 in the lower layer.
Protection walls A fit to a respective side of the external private parts of the user in a comfortable way.
10 This effectively prevents side leakage after heavy or sudden excretion of menses or urine, thus addressing the defects of the single sheet leakage prevention edge as seen in the prior art.
As illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, the invention is 15 used to make a sanitary towel 10. The leak-proof base 3 and the hydrophilic. surface layer 2 wrap up the high polymer absorbent pad. The edges are laminated by pressing, and folded up at both sides to form the protection walls. The menses are prevented from seeping 20 along the inner thighs by means of the close fit of the upper layer 11 of the pad to the outer reproduction organ. The side leakage protection is provided by the protection wall A and by the internal channel 13 in the high polymer absorbent pad. In addition, elastic edges 101 may be 25 provided at both sides of the sanitary towel 10 as illustrated in Figure 7 for the user to engage in sports activities or sleep without fear of seepage. The shape and thickness of the sanitary towel 10 of the present invention 7 may be varied, depending on the amount of the menstruation.
For making a baby diaper 20, the high polymer absorbent pad, wrapped up by the leak-proof base 3 and the hydrophilic surface layer 2, is made roughly I-shaped. A 5 re-attachable band 201 is provided at each respective wing of the rear end of the baby diaper 20. An elastic folded edge 202 is provided at each respective side of the baby diaper 20. The internal channel 13 and the folded protection wall A structure of the pad, combined with the 10 elastic folded edge 202, prevent urine from leaking sideways.
Another preferred embodiment of the pads of the present invention is illustrated in Figure 10 and relates to an adult diaper 30 for the use by those who suffer 15 continence problems or have difficulty moving around. Referring to Figures 10 and 11, both ends of the pad of the present invention can be incorporated with an elastic ring 401 or a re-attachable tape ring 402 to form a light-duty diaper 40 to facilitate the user to wear it. Figures 12 20 and 13 show other preferred embodiments of the present invention in the form of an ordinary urine pad 50 or a nursing pad 60.
The present invention has been described in an illustrative manner. It achieves the purpose of preventing 25 back permeation and side leak by applying the technology of diverting the menses or urine for improved results of diffusion and absorption with the structures of the internal channel 13 and the protection wall A. It is to be 8 understood that the terminology used is intended to be in the nature of description rather than of limitation. Many modifications and variations of the present invention are feasible in light of the above teachings. Therefore, it is to be understood that the invention may be practised otherwise than as specifically described.
