Variable-speed ratchet gearing.-The coils employed in coil spring variable-speed or other ratchet drives are tightened upon the driven shaft simultaneously at both ends to ensure adequate grip. A variable-throw driving-crank 10, Fig. 1, oscillates an arm 13 on a pin 16 loose in a sleeve 17 integral with a lever 15 secured on a loose rock-shaft 14, a second arm 18 on the pin bearing on one end of the coil spring 20 surrounding the driven shaft 19. The other coil end directly engages the sleeve 17. Both coil ends are arranged to have both axial and radial freedom with relation to their actuating-means, to permit relay coiling of the spring. The feed is clockwise. Two such ratchet-gears may be operated by a single variable-throw crank, and the two arms 13 may be interconnected by a floating link which receives the drive, so that there may be a limited lead or lag between the gears. As shown in Fig. 4, the two coil ends may be driven separately by variable cranks 22, 23 on separate shafts or a common shaft, a spring 24 being inserted in one drive. Three springs may be arranged to be actuated in phase on a single shaft. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the following or non-driving end of the coil may be actuated by a weight acting by inertia. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
