Abstract
A device for catching dust and debris during drilling of a hole in a wall comprises a pocket 26 having a notch 41 in the upper edge of its rear wall 28 and a member 40 adhered to the front face 29 of the rear wall 28 so as to partially cover the notch. The member 40 also has adhesive covered by a release sheet 42, removal of which enables the device to be adhered to the wall to be drilled. The rear face of the member 40 thus has two areas of low-tack adhesive, the outer of which forms a permanent bond with the surface 29 once it has been held there for one or more days, but the inner being releasable from the wall if held there for a relatively short time. The pocket 26 of upwardly tapering shape is formed by folding a blank and adhering gusset panels 14, 20 to the rear wall 28.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Collection device This invention relates to a collection device and to methods for using and producing such a device. In particular, this invention relates to the device for the collection of dust and other debris produced during drilling, for example into a wall.
Drilling into surfaces such as walls usually generates a considerable amount of dust, and other plaster, brick, wood or stone and debris which has to be cleaned up. Various attempts have been made to collect the dust and other debris as it is generated. For example, mechanical dust extraction devices have been provided which remove airborne particles from around of the drill bit. Such devices are relatively cumbersome and prone to damage in the working environment. Dust collection devices in the form of a pouch have been provided which can be arranged under the drill bit and a fixed to the drill. Such dust collection devices are disadvantageous in that they may become damaged in use by the rotation of the drill bit or chuck.
German Gebrauchsmuster DE29706467U1 ( Seyed Asgari ) and Patent application No. DE19520377A1 ( Boillat ) each disclose flexible pouches which can be fixed to the surface to be drilled for collection of dust during the drilling process. Each pouch bears a strip of low tack adhesive or a self adhesive strip attached to a rearward facing, or surface engaging panel of the pouch. The design shown in the former document cannot be manufactured to on a commercial scale such as it to provide a dust proof seal at its sides, whereas the design of the latter is relatively inefficient in terms of dust collection. In particular the device disclosed in DE29706467 comprises at least one inwardly folding side panel including converging fold lines.
So far as the inventors are aware, no folding machine, as would be required for automation of production of such devices are can produce such folds such that the side panels taper to a lower edge in a practice, such panels would
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
have to be truncated so they do not extend to the lower edge of the device thus not providing a dust proof seal.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved collection device which can be relatively easily and economically produced.
According to one aspect, there is provided a dust collection device for collecting dust or other debris during a drilling operation, the device comprising a pocket to receive the dust or other debris and a means of for attaching the device to a surface in which a hole is to be drilled, whereby in dust or other debris is collected in the pocket during drilling, in which the device includes at least one side panel having a fold formed parallel with a major axis of the device. Such a device can be a economically manufactured on a commercial scale.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a dust collection device comprising a pocket to be attached to a surface to be drilled whereby dust and to/or other debris is collected in the pocket, as a hole is created in the surface, in which the collection device is attached to the surface by means of an adhesive component attached to a forward facing panel of the device. The inventors have found that some conventional low tack adhesives will actually bond strongly to the paper from which the device is manufactured after a matter of time whilst the adhesive will still reasealably bond to the surface. In this way, the device can be resealably fixed to the wall with only one adhesive being required. The dust collection device according to the invention is advantageous in that it can be produced relatively cheaply and therefore sold as a disposable item. The collection device is simple to use, relying principally on dust falling into the pocket under the influence of gravity. It will be appreciated that the collection device of the invention is not limited to use in drilling into walls, but may be applicable in any situation where debris is formed. For example, the device may be used to collect debris generated by cutting, routing, chipping or carving a material such as wood. All such
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
operations, and like operations are referred to it herein for the purpose of convenience as "drilling" or "drilling operations".
A release paper may be applied to a surface-engaging portion of the adhesive component prior use according to the adhesive used.
The pocket may be formed from paper, card, fabric or a plastics material. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the pocket is formed from a coated paper material. Preferably, the dust collection device is of a unitary construction. Preferably, the dust collection device of the invention includes or provides a guide for drilling a hole. The guide may be, for example, a notch or aperture defined by a surface of the dust collection device.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a blank for forming a dust collection device according to the invention, the blank comprising a planar sheet to be folded to form at least the pocket of the dust collection device.
The invention also provides a method of forming a dust collection device, the method comprising folding a blank according to the second aspect of the invention.
According to a fourth aspect of the invention there is provided a method of collecting dust and/or other debris when forming a hole, the method comprising attaching a dust collection device according to the invention to a surface adjacent where a hole is to be drilled in the surface and drilling a hole whereby the dust and/or other debris is collected in the pocket of the device. A dust collection device and methods for construction and use of devices in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, figures 1 to 7, in which:
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank for forming a collection device in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the blank of Fig. 1 from the opposite position to that of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a collection device in accordance with the invention partly disassembled from the blank of Fig. 1 and Fig.2; Figure 4 is a plan view of the collection device of Fig.3 in a pre-use condition. Figure 5 is a plan view of the collection device of Fig.4 in an in-use condition; Figure 6 is a side view of the collection device of Fig.4; Figure 7 is a perspective detail view of an adhesive component assembly used in a collection device according to the invention; The blank 10 shown in Fig. 1, which is symmetrical about major axis A-A, is formed from a unitary piece of 115 gsm coated paper. The blank is scored or otherwise conditioned for ease of folding, along various fold lines indicated by dotted lines 12, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24. The blank comprises a front panel 26, a rear panel 28 and gusset-forming side panels 30 and 32. A permanent adhesive is applied to the outer edges of side panels 30 and 32 in bands 34 and 36 respectively.
Rear panel 28 as a surface at 29 which has fought facing, in use, shown in Fig. 2 but obscured in Fig. 1.
In order to assemble the dust collection device 11 from the blank 10, the side panels 30, 32 are folded inwardly about fold lines 20 and 14 respectively and
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
then rear panel 28 is brought up into contact with the thus folded side panels 30, 32 by folding along fold line 24.
An adhesive component 40 shown particularly in Fig.7 is fixed to the forward facing surface 29 of the rear panel 28 in the vicinity of the upper edge of that panel such as to partially cover notch 41 formed by that panel. A release paper 42 is then fixed to the exposed adhesive area of adhesive component 40. It will be appreciated by the skilled addressee than the adhesive component 40 and release paper 42 may be pre-assembled and fixed to the collection device either in a single operation or, preferably to the blank prior to assembly of the collection device 11. Prior to use, the collection device has the configuration shown in Fig.4. For use, the front panel 26 is brought forward whereupon side panels 30 and 32 are flattened by means of further folding along lines 12, 16, 18 and 22 such a side panels now become flat. The in use configuration of the device 11, is shown in Fig.5 and Fig.6.
The adhesive component 40 is fixed to the blank-10 for at least 24 hours, preferably at least 168 hours before use of the assembled collection device. In this way, the adhesive coating the portions of the component 40 in contact with the forward facing surface 29 of the blank 10 forms a stronger bond with the material of the blank 10 than the adhesive will with the surface on which the collection device is to be fixed.
Thus the assembled collection device can be resealably fixed to a surface to be drilled. In the embodiment shown, the side panels 30, 32 are formed on respective sides of the front panel 26 however, as will be appreciated they could equally well be formed on the back panel 28 or even be discrete.
In use, the surface of the dust collection device 11 is presented to a surface in which a hole is to be drilled, such that the area or an appropriate marking, for example a cross, where the hole is to be drilled is visible to the user within notch. The device 11 is attached to the surface by the adhesive compound after removal of the release paper. The front panel is allowed to fall forwards
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
(or is manually opened by the user) and the drill (not shown) is presented to the surface in order to drill the hole. This minimises the chances of the front panel impeding the drill. Dust or other debris caused to fall from a surface being drilled by the action of the drill is collected within the bag. On completion of the drilling action the dust collection device 11 can be removed from the surface with minimal damage to the surface by virtue of the low-peel strength of the adhesive. Furthermore, the use of low-peal strength adhesive means that the dust collection device can be used several times before it will no longer adhere to a surface. Advantageously, the upper edge of the rear panel can be folded inwardly said that the adhesive component can be used to seal pocket to prevent dust or debris contained in the pocket from falling out.
It will be appreciated that the notch can have a variety of shapes. For example, it may be rectangular or triangular. Alternatively, and aperture may be formed by the rear panel which acts as a drill guide. Such an aperture may be provided in any suitable location in the drill guide.
Whilst blank of unitary construction has been described, it will be appreciated that the device may be produced from a plurality of components. In particular, the front panel may be formed from a relatively dense material so that the pocket will tend to open under gravity.
