Abstract

A light fitting comprises a lamp housing (2) including a generally cylindrical outer surface (8) and a cover sleeve (3) having a generally cylindrical internal surface (9) dimensioned so that the cover sleeve can fit over the outer surface of the lamp housing. An annular groove (10) is formed in the internal surface of the cover sleeve and a spring clip (5), mounted on the lamp housing (2), is adapted to engage resiliently with the annular groove to retain the cover sleeve (3) releasably in place on the lamp housing.

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> LIGHT FITTING The invention relates to light fittings and in particular to light fittings including a lamp housing and a detachable cover sleeve.
With light fittings such as spotlights, it is often awkward to replace the lamp (light bulb) because the space between the lamp and the surrounding fitting is very limited. This problem can be overcome by providing a cover sleeve which can be detached from the lamp housing but it is then necessary to provide means for detachably mounting the cover sleeve to the lamp housing.
The invention provides a solution whereby the cover sleeve can be simply pushed onto and pulled off the lamp housing.
Accordingly, the invention provides a light fitting comprising: a lamp housing including a generally cylindrical outer surface; a cover sleeve having a generally cylindrical internal surface dimensioned so that the cover sleeve can fit over the outer surface of the lamp housing; an annular groove formed in the internal surface of the cover sleeve; and a spring clip mounted on the lamp housing and adapted to engage resiliently with the annular groove to retain the cover sleeve releasably in place on the lamp housing.

Figure 1 is a side view of alight fitting; Figure 2 is an exploded view, in cross-section, of the light fitting; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional through the light fitting when assembled; and Figure 4 is an isometric view of a spring clip.
The light fitting shown in the drawings is a spotlight and incorporates a stem 1 (shown only partially in Figure 1), which connects to a mounting fixture or a track, a lamp housing 2 and a cover sleeve 3. The lamp housing is of generally cylindrical shape and houses a lamp holder 4 into which a lamp (not shown) can be fitted in known manner. A generally U-shaped spring clip 5 having a base 6 and two limbs 7 is mounted on the housing. The base 6 is mounted between the lamp housing 2 and the lamp holder 4.
The lamp housing 2 includes a generally cylindrical outer surface 8 and the cover sleeve has a generally cylindrical inner surface 9 dimensioned so that the cover sleeve 3 can fit over the outer surface 8 of the lamp housing 2. The internal surface 9 is formed with an annular groove 10. When the cover sleeve is fitted onto the lamp housing, the free ends of the limbs 7 of the spring clip 5 engage resiliently in the annular groove 10 to retain the cover sleeve 3 releasably in place of the lamp housing 2.
Whilst the cover sleeve 3 is shown here as being of simple cylindrical shape, it may incorporate flared or other shaped portions as desired according to the design of the light fitting.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A light fitting comprising: a lamp housing including a generally cylindrical outer surface; a cover sleeve having a generally cylindrical internal surface dimensioned so that the cover sleeve can fit over the outer surface of the lamp housing; an annular groove formed in the internal surface of the cover sleeve; and a spring clip mounted on the lamp housing and adapted to engage resiliently with the annular groove to retain the cover sleeve releasably in place on the lamp housing.
  2. 2. A light fitting as claimed in Claim 1, wherein a lamp holder is mounted within the lamp housing and the spring clip is mounted between the lamp housing and the lamp holder.

A light fitting as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the spring clip is generally U-shaped having a base and two limbs and wherein the base is mounted to the lamp housing and the free ends of the limbs engage in the annular groove in the cover sleeve to retain the cover sleeve in place on the lamp housing.
