Abstract

A vehicle security device comprises an arm (10,20) having means at one end for mounting to a vehicle steering column (C) and means (32) at an opposite end for releasably engaging around the rim of the steering wheel (S). The arm (10,20) is arranged to fold downwardly when released from the steering wheel (S), and means are provided (e.g. a biasing spring) for retaining the arm in a stowed position extending generally parallel to the steering column.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Variable security device The present invention relates to a security device for vehicles.
A wide variety of devices have been proposed hitherto to provide for vehicle security. In one type of security device, an arm is provided which couples at one end to the steering column and at the other end to the steering wheel: when in place, the device severely limits the angle through which the steering which may be turned and so locks the vehicle against being steered. A drawback of this device is that it must be decoupled from both the steering column and the steering wheel, and then stowed away, before the driver can use his vehicle.
I have now devised a vehicle security device which overcomes the drawback noted above.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a vehicle security device which comprises an arm having means at one end for mounting to a vehicle steering column and means at an opposite end for releasably engaging around the rim of the vehicle steering wheel, the arm being arranged to fold downwardly, when released from the steering wheel, and having means for retaining it in a stowed position extending generally parallel to the steering column.
The arm may be formed in two parts, comprising an upper arm part which is pivoted to a lower arm part and arranged for the upper part to fold down against the lower part.
Preferably a spring acts on the upper arm part, to bias it into its stowed position when the upper arm part is released from the steering wheel.
The means for mounting the arm to the steering column preferably comprises a clamping means, for example including a U-shaped bracket for engaging around the steering column.
The means for releasably engaging around the rim of the
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
steering wheel preferably comprises a U-shaped bracket having a member for locking across its open end.
It will be appreciated that the security device of the present invention may be mounted permanently to the steering column: when released from the steering wheel, the arm is simply folded down and retained in a stowed position generally parallel to the steering column, and thus out of the way of the driver. When required to lock the steering wheel, the arm is simply pivoted upwardly to engage the steering wheel.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is an isometric view showing a security device, in accordance with the present invention, fitted to the steering column of a car and also locked to the steering wheel.
FIGURE 2 is an isometric view of the security device prior to fitting to the car steering column; FIGURE 3 is a front view of the security device; and FIGURE 4 is a side view of the security device. Referring to the drawings, there is shown a security device which comprises an arm, formed in two parts, 10, 20 having mounting means 30 at one end for coupling to the steering column C of a car, and a locking means 32 at its opposite end for coupling to the rim of the steering wheel S of the car.
The lower part 10 of the arm comprises a rectangular- section metal bar which is enlarged in width at its lower end to form a rectangular head 32. On its rear face, the head 32 is provided with a V-shaped formation 34 for fitting against the underside of the steering column C. A U-shaped bracket 35 is provided for engaging over the upperside of the steering column C: two bolts 36 are provided, for inserting through respective bores 37 formed in the head 32, adjacent its
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
opposite sides, to engage in threaded bores in the ends of the bracket 35. Thus, by tightening the bolts 36, the steering column C is firmly clamped between the bracket and the V-shaped formation 34 of the head 32 of the lower arm part 10.
The upper arm part 20 of the arm comprises a rectangular section metal bar pivotally attached to the upper end of the lower arm part 10. Thus, the lower part 10 is formed with a pair of forwardly-projecting legs 12, between which the end of upper arm part 20 is located: a pivot pin 14 extends through the spaced-apart lugs 12 and through the upper arm part 20. The lower arm part 10 is also formed with a secondary pair of spaced-apart lugs 16, inset from its upper end, and the upper arm part 20 is also formed with a pair of spaced-apart lugs 18: a coiled tension spring 19 has its opposite ends coupled to respective pins 23,24 extending between the respective pair of lugs 16, 18.
At its upper end, the upper arm part 20 is provided with a U-shaped bracket 25, the open end or recess of which faces rearwardly. A locking plate 26 is hinged, along one edge thereof, to the outer end of the bracket 25 and is formed, adjacent its opposite edge, with projecting lugs e.g. 27 for reception within corresponding recesses e.g. 28 of a key- operated lock 29 at the inner end of the bracket 25.
In use, the lower end of the lower arm part 10 is clamped to the steering column C at an appropriate position, using the clamping bracket 35 and bolts 36: thus, the lower arm part 10 is mounted along the underside, and parallel to, the steering column. Normally, the spring 19 services to pivot or fold the upper arm part 20 down, to lie against the front of the lower arm part 10 and accordingly stowed out of the way of the driver. When the driver wishes to put the security device into effect, he pivots the upper arm part 20 upwardly for the bracket 25, at its upper end, to engage around the rim of the
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
steering wheel, adjacent the lower edge thereof, as shown in Figure 1: the driver then closes the hinged lock plate 26 across the inner circumference of the steering wheel rim, for its lugs 27 to engage into the lock 29. When the driver later wishes to drive the car away, he uses a key to unlock the lock 29 and so release the lock plate 26, allowing the bracket 25 to disengage from the steering wheel S and the upper arm part 20 to be folded down to its stowed position, against the front of the lower arm part 10.
