Abstract

The engine 1 is shown connected to the gearbox 2. The drive shafts 3 then emerge from the combined unit along the central axis of the vehicle. The drive shafts then pass to the differential units 4 of the front and rear axles 5 providing drive for the wheels 6. The suspension members 7 are shown mounted directly to the engine/transmission unit at one end and to the axle at the other. Additional springing and damping may also form part of the suspension. The axle at one end could be allowed to move with a predominantly vertical movement in relation to the engine/transmission and the axle at the other could be allowed to move vertically and also articulate. A three point mounting system 8 is shown on each axle.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> VEHICLE TRANSMISSION LAYOUT This invention relates to vehicle transmission layout Four wheel drive systems are commonly used on vehicles. These consist of an engine and transmission system delivering the drive to some combination of the four wheels. Such systems however are complicated in terms of the way they mount to the vehicle. Moreover when the application requires the mounting of additional equipment to the front or rear, for example cultivation equipment on an agricultural tractor, very different front and rear systems have to be used further adding to the complexity. In particular this invention relates to a transmission system that utilises an engine (or other prime- mover) and gearbox positioned across the vehicle with drive shafts aiming generally front and rearwards. The engine/transmission combination can then be used to mount all the suspension from. Furthermore, the similar front and rear axles within the suspension can then be used to mount similar equipment mounting systems from. The aim of the present invention is to provide a means of vehicle construction that gives good symmetry front to rear and general simplicity of manufacture. This arrangement allows a single engine/transmission combination to be used as the base unit from which to mount generally symmetrical suspension systems front and rear. A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a plan of the vehicle layout. Figure 2 shows a side view of the vehicle layout.
The engine 1 is shown connected to the gearbox 2. The drive shafts 3 then emerge from the combined unit along the central axis of the vehicle. The transmission may incorporate a differential unit. In one embodiment the shafts would contra-rotate with the difference being accommodated in the axles.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
In this embodiment the drive shafts then pass to the differential units 4 of the front and rear axles 5 providing drive for the wheels 6. The suspension members 7 are shown mounted directly to the engine/transmission unit at one end and to the axle at the other. Additional springing and damping, not shown here, may also form part of the suspension.
In one embodiment the axle at one end would be allowed to move with a predominantly vertical movement in relation to the engine/transmission and the axle at the other would be allowed to move vertically and also articulate. In the embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings this could be achieved by rigidly connecting to one another the two lower suspension members 7 of one end.
As shown all wheels could be steered. A three point mounting system 8 is shown on each axle.
