Nuts.-The stationary tools 10, 13, 66, 66<1> of a nut-blank making machine are mounted in a tool-holder 72 which is detachable from the machine and carries guides for the tools 8, 9 which are mounted in a slide 6 operated by a crank 15. A rod 12 is fed under the spring- pressed punch 13, which holds it up to a stop 19. The tool 8 then cuts a blank from the rod 12 and presses it over the punch 13 and against the crowning-die 66. During the return of the tool 8 a pawl 69, Fig. 3, acts on a lever 70 which, by means of a link 74, rotates a fork 67 to engage the blank and force, it back over the punch and past edges 66<1> which remove the burr. Then a nose 81, Fig. 6, of a lever 79 is moved up by a link 90 to engage a lever 82 and cause an arm 86, mounted on a common shaft 84, to sweep the blank laterally into a shoot. The pawl 69 and nose 81 are pivoted so that they can move aside during the up stroke. The bar 12 is fed by jaws 17, 17<1>, Fig. 1, on a slide 27 which is reciprocated by a cam 18, lever 20, and link 23. The tools 9, 10 are for cutting the square blank into hexagonal form.
