Abstract

Vibration absorbing platforms to absorb unwanted vibrations by placements below equipment or apparatus and comprising a quantity of bitumen, modified bitumen or other vibration-absorbent material (if necessary, enclosed in a bag, or otherwise sealed to prevent it's horizontal displacement); and a piece of glass or other solid material which rests upon this. A solid base may be used, upon which rests the vibration-absorbent material and solid material, and there may be one or more consecutive layers of these latter two materials.

Description

2362939 VIBRATION-ABSORBING PLATFORMS This invention relates to
vibration-absorbing platforms.
There are many instances in which the presence of vibrations in equipment or apparatus is undesirable, and this is especially true in the field of audio equipment, in particular high fidelity loudspeakers, turntables, compact disc players and tape recorders.
The production of sound waves from loudspeakers causes vibrations in their cabinet enclosures. These vibrations can compromise the performance of the loudspeaker, in terms of their ability to reproduce the sound of the original source recording as accurately as possible.
High-fidelity loudspeakers are usually designed to be mounted on stands to improve their performance. High-fidelity floorstanding loudspeakers are designed to rest on the floor. High-fidelity loudspeakers when standmounted, and high-fidelity floorstanding loudspeakers are both usually terminated below with spikes, which make contact with the floor. These spikes anchor the speakers in place and allow greater transfer of vibrational energy from the speaker cabinets to the floor due to concentration of the energy in the points of the spikes. Any vibrational energy not transferred into the floor will, for a period of time, remain within the loudspeaker cabinet and this is undesirable as described above.
According to the present invention there is provided vibration-absorbing platforms each comprising a quantity of bitumen, modified bitumen or other vibration-absorbent material (if necessary, enclosed in a bag, or otherwise sealed to prevent it's horizontal displacement); and a piece of glass or other solid material which rests upon this. A solid base may be used, upon which rests the vibration-absorbent material and solid material, and there may be one or more consecutive layers of these latter two materials.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows a single vibration-absorbing platform.
Figure 2 shows a single high fidelity floorstanding loudspeaker mounted on four separate vibration-absorbing platforms.
Referring to the drawings, one vibration-absorbing platform, is used for each floor spike that each loudslraker possesses. The floorstanding loudspeaker kis terminated in four floor spikes 1, so four vibrationabsorbing platforms Kre used for each loudspeaker. The vibrationabsorbing platforms are placed on the floor such that each 1 one lies centrally under one floor spike, and such that the loudspeaker is located in the appropriate place for normal listening. The loudspeaker is then carefully lowered onto the platforms such that the spikes are centrally located on them.
Vibration-absorbing platforms can be used to reduce unwanted vibration induced in hi-fi components, for example, simply by placing three or four platforms underneath each components at or near it's comers or edges.
