Description

2362835 1 ON-DEMAND TICKET SYSTEM This invention relates to an on-demand
ticket system, and in particular to a method and apparatus for playing a lottery game through television broadcasts, but which is not limited thereto and may be used for the electronic purchase of a wide range of tickets, such as airline tickets and the like.
Lotteries have become very popular in many countries as a way of raising money for charities and other good causes while giving the player a chance to win a substantial amount of money. Conventionally a player buys a ticket either with preselected lottery numbers of numbers chosen by the player when making the purchase, and at a later time the lottery numbers are drawn and announced normally through the media, in particular through televisions shows and news bulletins and through the press.
A number of potential disadvantages exist with such conventional lottery systems. In particular a player must go to a store, often for example a newsagents, and purchase a ticket. The ticket is a physical ticket that the player must keep safe at least until such time as the lottery draw is made, often if purchased in advance of the draw a lottery ticket may be lost. The player must also compare the results as announced after the draw with the numbers on the lottery ticket. In some countries it is possible to purchase a lottery ticket by telephone, but this requires the purchaser to keep a record of the numbers on the purchased ticket or tickets and this record may be lost. Telephone purchasing in this manner is also only possible for the most simple form of lotteries.
2 An objective of the present invention is to provide a way for playing lottery tickets that is more convenient than in conventional methods, and in particular a way for playing a lottery through a television broadcast.
According to the present invention there is provided a system for playing a lottery game or the like, comprising: (a) means for issuing electronic lottery tickets in response to a remote request from a player.
(b) means for encoding lottery data as part of a broadcast television signal, and (c) means for decoding said lottery data at a plurality of receiving television display means and for displaying said data on said television display means.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the lottery data includes data common to a plurality of players of said lottery (eg the lottery numbers that have been drawn) and data personal to individual players (eg the numbers on a player's ticket(s)), and wherein said decoding means includes means for distinguishing between said common data and said personal data whereby common data may be displayed on all the plurality of television display means while personal data is displayed only on the television display means associated with a player to whom the personal data applies.
The personal lottery data may include details of the tickets purchased by a particular player. The common lottery data may include details of the numbers that have been drawn in the lottery and other material such as advertising and promotional material.
Preferably the lottery data, both common data and personal data, may be encoded within the broadcast television signal and decoding means may be provided at each television display means for decoding the lottery data from the television signal. Preferably the common data and the personal data may be broadcast in packets 3 distinguished by packet addresses and the decoding means may preferably be able to identify common and personal data from the packet address.
The present invention is also applicable to the purchase of tickets other than lottery or gaming tickets, for example the invention may be employed for the electronic air tickets, rail tickets or cinema tickets. In such cases the broadcasting of the ticket data will be for the purposes of confirmation. The personal ticket data will include, for example, details of the ticket purchased (in the case of an air ticket details of the flight) and the common data may include advertising data and other associated data. According to the present invention therefore there is also provided a system for purchasing a ticket, comprising: (a) means for issuing an electronic ticket in response to a remote request from a purchaser, (b)means for encoding ticket data as part of a broadcast television signal, and (c) means for decoding said ticket data at a plurality of receiving television display means and for displaying said data on said television display means.
Viewed from a still further broad aspect the present invention provides a method of simultaneously displaying on a television display means a video program and data, wherein said data is encoded in the television signal broadcasting said video program and is decoded a television display means, and wherein said video program is displayed by said television display means as a picture box within a larger picture, and wherein said data is graphically displayed in the remainder of said larger picture.
Viewed from yet another broad aspect the present invention provides apparatus for simultaneously displaying on a television display means a video program and data, comprising means for encoding said data in a television signal broadcasting said video program, means provided at a television display means for decoding said data and for 4 extracting said data from said television signal, means provided at said television display means for displaying said video program as a picture box within a larger picture, and means provided at said television display means for graphically displaying said data within the remainder of said larger picture.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, each said television display means may also be provided with means for comparing the results of the lottery with a ticket purchased by a player.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig.1 is a schematic block diagram showing a method for purchasing a lottery ticket, Fig.2 is a schematic block diagram illustrating the receiving of broadcast ticket data, Fig.3 shows a possible TV screen display, and Fig.4 shows a flow diagram illustrating result display and checking.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described which may be regarded as comprising three major components: (1) ticket purchase, (2) ticket data broadcasting, and (3) result display and checking. These three components of the system of this embodiment will now be described in turn.
Ticket purchas A user may purchase an electronic ticket from a central ticketing facility in a number of ways, but importantly the player may purchase the electronic ticket remotely, eg by telephone, fixed line or mobile or computer (eg through the Internet). One possibility is automatic DTMF purchasing in which the server is dialed up via a phone line using DTMF tone dialing and the ticket purchasing may be performed automatically by a preprogrammed device. The ticket may be paid for either by providing credit card details or from a deposit account and may consist of numbers either chosen by the user or randomly chosen by the central ticketing facility. The ticket may consist of any number of numbers depending on the chosen rules of the particular lottery.
It will be understood that the user does not receive a physical ticket. Instead an electronic ticket is allocated to the user and is identified by a user ID previously registered with the central ticketing facility. It will be understood that many users may each buy one or more tickets and the details of the tickets will be given their respective user IDs and stored by the central ticketing facility. When the lottery is ready to be drawn and no more ticket purchases are allowed, this ticket information is then arranged as personal data as will be explained below and transmitted to a television transmitting station for broadcast.
Ticket data broadcg in The television transmitting station broadcasts a signal that is a combination of a conventional television video and sound program, showing for example the drawing of the winning lottery numbers, plus additional lottery data which may include a running check on the lottery numbers already drawn, as well as advertising material and other promotional material. This additional lottery data is encoded in the television broadcast, for example in the V131 signal, and is broadcast with the television program on a real time 6 basis. Alternatively the data may be encoded in the television signal in other ways, for example in a data channel of a digital television broadcast.
This additional lottery data is common to all players and indeed to anybody else who watches the television program regardless of whether they have purchased a ticket or not. The additional lottery data is presented on a viewer's TV screen next to a box showing the TV program.
Also encoded in the VBI signal, however, are the details of the purchased lottery tickets identified by the associated user IDs. As will be explained below, although this data is broadcast to all players receiving the television program, because a user ID is associated with each ticket, means are provided whereby the television set of each user selects from the TV signal the ticket data associated with a particular user ID and displays that data only on the TV screen. Thus after a ticket has been purchased, the electronic ticket is displayed on the TV screen belonging to the purchaser. and only to the purchaser, in order that the ticket purchaser can see his or her ticket and the numbers as the lottery is being drawn.
Result display and checking As the lottery numbers are drawn, this information is presented in a number of ways. Firstly the numbers may be shown on a realtime basis as part of the conventional television broadcast. At the same time a running list of the drawn numbers may be included as part of the lottery data that is encoded in the V131 signal and which is presented on the screens of all players. An advantage of this is that it allows players to keep track of the previously drawn numbers. In addition, however, the TV set of each 7 player may be provided with means for comparing the numbers that are drawn and are encoded in the common lottery data, with the numbers on each electronic ticket associated with that player and displayed on that player's television set.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1 there is described in more detail the process of purchasing a lottery ticket. This may be done by a user telephoning 1 a given telephone number. Automated telephone answering means 2 may take a user through a sequence of steps which the user takes by pressing selected numbers of a conventional touchtone telephone handset. The information that a user provides in this way may include the number of tickets being purchased, whether the numbers on the tickets are to be randomly selected or chosen by a purchaser (and if the latter which numbers) and payment details (eg credit card details or deposit account details). It will be understood that of course the ticket purchase could also be done using human telephone operators. Each user is also provided with a unique personal ID code that is linked to the tickets that are purchased.
As an alternative to purchasing tickets through a telephone connection, as an alternative the tickets may be purchased through a dedicated website. In either case, it will be understood that a purchaser may purchase a lottery ticket from his own home and while a ticket or receipt may preferably be issued, such a receipt or ticket would be for confirmation purposes only and the "original tickeC would exist in electronic form within the system. The tickets may also be purchased through the television set. The common data that is to be broadcast as part of the television signal, which will be described in more detail below, may include a graphic interface that may be used to purchase tickets.
8 To this end each television set may be associated with communication means such as a modem for contacting the central server.
When the lottery is to be drawn, this is broadcast J3) through a television broadcast. The television broadcast will preferably include a conventional audio/video program showing the drawing of the lottery numbers in a conventional manner. In addition, however, lottery data is encoded in the V131 lines of the broadcast signal. As will be explained below, this lottery data includes data that is common to all players and also includes the details of the individual tickets purchased by each player of the lottery.
Referring to Fig.2 the broadcast signal is received by a conventional television antenna 20 and passes to a tuner 21. From the tuner 21 the signal is passed to both a VBI decoder 22 and a picture-in-picture means 23. The picture-in-picture means 23 outputs a video signal corresponding to the conventional television audio/video program showing the drawing of the lottery and outputs this signal from a video encoder 24. The conventional television program is therefore shown in a box on the television screen. It will be understood that the television screen may be a conventional television set, a multimedia display means, a computer or any other means adapted to display a television program.
At the same time the VBI decoder 22 under the control of a VB1 controller 25 decodes the lottery data and presents this data to a TV graphic system 26 which generates a video signal corresponding to graphics generated by graphic system 26 for displaying the lottery data. The picture- in-pi cture means 2-33 generates a video signal for this lottery data so that the lottery data is shown on parts of the TV screen not being used for the conventional TV audio/video program. The TV graphics system 26 may interface with a 9 memory 28 which may store user preferences for how the data should be displayed on the screen, and other information such as the user ID and name.
The lottery data encoded in the V131 lines includes data that is common to all players, eg advertising and promotional material and an updated running list of the numbers already drawn. The lottery data also, however, includes details of all the electronic lottery tickets purchased in advance of the draw, including in particular the numbers on each ticket and the user ID associated with each ticket that identifies the purchaser. Other data that may be included may comprise, ticket number, user ID, account balance and a statement. This data is also presented to the TV graphic system for display on the TV screen, but as this data is personal to each user it should be displayed on the TV screen of that user only. This personal data may also include messages intended for the purchaser and as such may function as a paging means.
This is achieved by using a special encoding system for this personal lottery data to separate it from the common lottery data. To this end, the lottery data is arranged in lines beginning with a four byte packet address PA 14:
Line 1: PAI PA2 PA3 PA4 Game Type TICKET DATA (n BYTES) CHECKSUM Line 2: PAI PA2 PA3 PA4 Game Type TICKET DATA (n BYTES) CHECKSUM Line 3: PAI PA2 PA3 PA4 Game Type TICKET DATA (n BYTES) CHECKSUM Line n: PAI PA2 PA3 PA4 Game Type TICKET DATA (n BYTES) CHECKSUM The four byte packet address may correspond to the user ID and the VBI controller 25 may be programmed to instruct the VB1 decoder 22 to decode these lines only if the packet address corresponds to the user ID which may be prestored by a user in the VBI controller 25. If the packet address is other than the prestored user ID, then it is ignored by the VB1 decoder. In this way only the personal lottery data corresponding to the user's ID as prestored in the V131 controller is displayed on the screen.
A particular packet address may be chosen to correspond to the public lottery data to show that this data is common to all players and may be displayed on the TV screens of all players. Where different forms of lottery are possible this may also be Indicated by the "game type" data.
Fig.3 is a representative TV screen showing how the screen may appear to a user.
In the top left of the screen there is shown a conventional TV program that shows the lottery draw. Below the TV program is displayed advertising and promotional material.
In the top right of the screen is shown lottery data that is common to all players, and in particular there is shown all the numbers that may possibly be drawn with the numbers already drawn highlighted. Below that, in the bottom right corner, is shown two tickets belonging to the user of this particular TV screen. Of course each television set may be provided with an interactive user interface that allows a user to decide by his or her personal preferences how the screen is to be divided between the video pro-ram, the common data and the personal data.
In the example of Fig.3 the lottery is in the form of a bingo game in which each ticket comprises a 5x5 grid of numbers and the objective may be to secure a line of drawn numbers (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally). Preferably. as the numbers are t 11 drawn means are provided for checking the numbers on an individual ticket and marking them accordingly on the screen when they are drawn. This can be seen in both the tickets in Fig.3. Fig.4 is a flowchart showing a game hit checking and result displaying means.
When VBI data is received the first question to be asked is whether it is common data or personal data, common data being identified by a particular set of packet address. If the data is common data it is presented on the screen by the graphics system as previously described. If the data is private lottery data, eg ticket details, a cheek is made to see if the user ID, eg the packet address, matches that of the user of the TV screen in question. If the answer is no, then nothing further occurs and the cycle repeats until the next piece of VBI data is received. If the personal data does match the user of the TV screen, then the personal lottery data is presented on the screen by the graphics system. In addition. however, the common data of the numbers being drawn is matched with the personal data by means of a game rule intelligent database and if a match is found this is indicated in the manner in which the personal data is presented.
Accordingly it will be seen that the present invention, at least in its preferred forms as described above, provides a system for playing a lottery or like game such as bingo, in which a user may purchase a ticket electronically and remotely. The ticket that he or she has purchased may then be displayed on his or her personal television screen along with a conventional broadcast of the lottery numbers being drawn and common 20 lottery data such as a running list of the numbers drawn.
It should be understood that the present invention may be applied to a of lottery type games, ranging from simple games in which a player has a series of numbers and an equal number of numbers are drawn by the lottery and the best match 12 wins, to more complex bingo-type games in which particular patterns of matches on a card must be achieved to win. In addition the present invention may be applied to a wide variety of games including guessing the results of a sporting contest such as a football Z:- match or a basketball game. In essence, however, the invention is applicable to any game in which a user purchases a ticker bearing a number of characters (alphanumeric characters preferably but not necessarily, other symbols could be employed) and a match must be made to characters that are drawn by the lottery.
