Abstract

A lockable socket enclosure (15) goes over a mains socket outlet (10) to prevent the unauthorised extraction of plugs. The enclosure can be fitted to a standard 13 amp double wall socket by loosening the two fixing screws and slipping the socket enclosure between the wall and the socket. A single OFF button (18) is provided to disconnect the power supply to both plugs - this allows someone without the key to switch off the power if required but still prevents the use of the socket for another purpose.

Description

2362765 LOCKABLE MAINS SOCKET ENCLOSURE This invention relates to the plug
security of a twin gang 13 amp socket outlet.
The 13 amp double socket outlets that are installed within private homes, and business and are connected to the 230v.a.c. ring main circuit. These 13 amp sockets are manufactured by a number of different companies, but are made to a standard size and hole fixing centres.
It is quite common to see labels attached to plug tops that read "Do not remove or switch ofP'. In hospitals and residential care homes, the importance of maintaining the power supply to essential equipment can be critical. This type of equipment is often plugged in and switched on with insulation tape stuck over the switch or plug itself However, this dose not prevent anyone from unplugging the equipment and using the socket for their own purpose. In some cases the plug may need to remain in the socket but switched off, to prevent unauthorised use, or the complete socket may need to be blanked ofF According to the present invention there is provided a lockable plastic enclosure to fit any standard double 13 amp socket outlet for 230 vac mains supply. This lockable enclosure prevents the extraction of both plugs when secured, and to comply with electrical safety regulations is equipped with one offbutton that disconnects the electricity supply to both outlets. The enclosure is secured by a tumbler lock and two keys are provided.
Installation of the enclosure requires a screwdriver to loosen the two fixing screws of the socket outlet (approximate 4 mm), this allows the lockable enclosure to slide between the wall and the socket outlet plate. Once the lockable enclosure is in position, the socket outlet screws may be tightened, and the installation is complete.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows in perspective, a typical 13 amp double socket outlet prior to socket enclosure installation.
Figure 2 illustrates the lockable socket enclosure in the process of fitting the socket outlet.
Figure 3 shows the lockable socket enclosure fitted with the lid closed.
Referring to the drawing the lockable socket enclosure comprises a back boxl 1 a hinged lid 12 that incorporates the lock 19 and stop mechanism 18.
In order to install the lockable socket enclosure, a screwdriver 16 is required to loosen the fixing screws approximately 4 nun as shown in Fig 1. The back box 11 is then slid between the wall and the double socket outlet 10 in the direction of the arrow 13 as illustrated in Fig 2. Once the screws are re tightened, the appliance plugs 17 may be inserted and the lid 12 closed and locked as shown in Fig 3. The two slots 14 in the lid allow plug lead entry. In the event of an emergency, a stop button 18 is provided that disconnects the electricity to both sockets, once this button has been pressed the enclosure lid 12 requires unlocking and opening to switch on the supply again.
