Abstract
A surgical operating drape 1 extends from the patient 3 out around the bodies of the operator and assistants 2, closely applied to the patient 3 or additional drape over the patient 3, closely applied around the bodies of the operator and assistants 2 or their clothing, and extending down to the theatre floor 8 around its perimeter. The surgical operating drape 1 may extend around theatre equipment positioned within its perimeter, such as an instrument table 4. This surgical operating drape creates a barrier between the operation site 6 and the space 5 underneath the operating table 7 and around the lower parts of the bodies of the operator and assistants 2. Airborne contamination of the operation site 6 with matter originating from the space 5 described may therefore be reduced.
Description
r SURGICAL OPERATING DRAPE This invention relates to a surgical operating
drape- 2362323
Drapes are commonly used during surgery. Their purpose is to maintain a sterile field around the operation site. Contamination of the operation site may occur by airborne matter, which may originate from the space beneath the operation table and around the lower parts of the bodies of the operator and assistants.
According to the present invention there is provided a surgical operating drape extending from the patient out around the bodies of the operator and assistants, closely applied to the patient or additional drape over the patient, closely applied around the bodies of the operator and assistants or their clothing, and extending down to the theatre floor around the perimeter of the drape. The surgical operating drape may extend around theatre equipment positioned within its perimeter, such as instrument tables. The present invention creates a barrier between the operation site and the space under the operating table and around the lower parts of the bodies of the operator and assistants. Airborne contamination of the operation site from matter originating from the space beneath the surgical operating drape described may therefore be reduced.
A specific embodiment of the invention mill now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: - Figure 1 Figure 2 shows in plan view the operating table, instrument table, and surgical operating drape extending out around the operator and assistants. For clarity the outline of the patient is shown underneath the drape.
illustrates the barrier created between the area of the operation site and the space under the operating table and around the lower parts of the bodies of the operator and assistants.
Figure 3 illustrates the surgical operating drape closely applied around the waist of the operator.
Referring to the drawing the surgical operating drape 1 comprises a sheet of material cut to form apertures 9 to allow the operator and assistants 2 to approach the operating table 7. It is cut to form an aperture 10 to allow an instrument table 4 to be positioned within the perimeter of the surgical operating drape 1. These apertures 9 and 10 are equipped with adhesive borders to allow close application of the surgical operating drape 1 around the waists of the operator and assistants 2 and around the instrument table 4, and to allow closure of the apertures 9 and 10. The surgical operating drape 1 is closely applied to the patient 3 by an adhesive border around the operation site 6 window. The surgical operating drape 1 is equipped with an adhesive border around its perimeter to allow it to be secured to the theatre floor 8, forming a barrier between the operation site 6 and the space 5 beneath the surgical operating drape 1 described.
