Abstract
A self tapping wood screw has a shaft and a head (5). The shaft has a first unthreaded portion (2) which tapers to a point (1) at an end remote from the head (5), a threaded portion (3) is provided between the first unthreaded portion (2) and a second unthreaded portion (4), shorter in length than the first unthreaded portion (2). The second unthreaded portion (4) extends from the threaded portion (3) to the head (5). In an alternative embodiment, the threaded portion extends between the first unthreaded portion and the head, there being no unthreaded portion adjacent the head.
Description
2361977 SELF-LOCATING WOOD SCREW This invention relates to a type of wood
screw that may be used to attach different materials onto wood.
Historically, such screws are well known but, even when aided with prior use of a tool, such as a gimlet, they are often initially difficult to use and may slip from their intended position until their thread has begun to enter the wood by several turns.
Also, although such screws offer a more robust attachment than the use of, say, a nail, the screwing motion they require to make the attachment is both more difficult to administer and more time consuming than an equivalent attachment using a nail.
An object of this invention is to provide a form of attachment which is easier and quicker to use than a screw but which provides a measure of the robustness of attachment associated with the use of a screw.
Accordingly, this invention comprises a single unit, made from any metal that may be used to construct a conventional wood screw, with a nonthreaded, lower end extending a portion of its length tapering to a point. From the upper part of this non-threaded section a conventional screw thread is fashioned, running up the next portion of its length. A nonthreaded portion, of shorter length to the first, extends upwards from this to the underside of the top. The top may be fashioned into any type of wood screw head, for example, a conventional, countersunk head.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a side view of the entire invention.
Referring to the drawing figure 1, the invention comprises a single unit with a lower, non-threaded, cylindrical portion 2 which tapers to a point 1. The mid portion 3 is threaded, with a conventional screw thread, extending to the upper portion 4 which is also non-threaded. The head 5 may be fashioned into any conventional screw head type. For ease of clarity only, figure 1 has been drawn with a conventional, countersunk head.
In order to operate, the invention may be held loosely at the nonthreaded portion 4 and the point 1 is positioned vertically against the wood into which it will be screwed. The invention is then forced into the wood by hitting the head 5 with a hammer until the lower part of the threaded portion 3 is adjacent to, and touching, the wood. The invention can then be screwed fully into the wood in the conventional manner by use of an appropriate screwdriver located into the head 5.

Claims (2)
1 The invention comprises a single unit, made from any metal that may be used to construct a conventional wood screw, with a non-threaded, lower end extending a portion of its length tapering to a point. From the upper part of this non-threaded section a conventional screw thread is fashioned, running up the next portion of its length. A non-threaded portion, of shorter length to the first, extends upwards from this to the underside of the top, which may be fashioned into any type of wood screw head.
2 A self-locating wood screw as claimed in claim 1 but where the threaded portion continues upwards such that it terminates at the underside of the head.
