Abstract
A method and apparatus for controlling at least a portion (10) of an electricity distribution network including conductors (13, 14) and a plurality of network devices (18, 19, 20, 21, 22) cooperating with the conductors to facilitate distribution of electricity, wherein control apparatus (27) are preferably co-located with selected network devices (18, 19, 20, 21) and communications apparatus (29) are associated with each control apparatus (27) to provide a communications link (32) between respective control apparatus. The control method includes the steps of monitoring (28) of distribution network state by the control apparatus co-located with the selected network devices and, upon detection of an abnormal condition (31) in the distribution network, one of the control apparatus temporarily assumes coordinating control of the network portion (10); whereby said one control apparatus issues commands to other control apparatus over the communications link (32) in accordance with a predetermined automation scheme.
