Abstract

An assembly in which a square or rectangular carton 10 with four corner pillars 14 - 17 is located on a pallet 11. Each pillar extends below the lower edges of the carton walls 18 - 21 and locates with a corresponding cut-out 12 in the corners of the pallet. The carton can be collapsed along crease lines 28, 29 in opposing walls 19, 21 and crease lines 33 in the base 30. The collapsed carton may be stored on the pallet (fig. 2) and covered with a lid 35 for return to the supplier. The pallet may be made of wood and the carton from cardboard or plastic.

Description

2361225 1 Pallet Pack This invention relates to a pallet pack that is to
say a carton which is used in conjunction with a pallet. Such assemblies are sometimes known as heavy duty pallet packs.
Heavy duty cartons or packs are relatively large containers which are used in conjunction with a pallet so that they can be lifted and transported around by fork lift trucks, and delivered to remote destinations. Typically such cartons are formed from cardboard and traditionally have been made by initially forming a cardboard blank having appropriate fold and cut lines. This blank can then be erected by folding it about fold lines in order to form a carton. Such cartons when in use need to be secured to their associated pallets and known ways of securing the carton to the pallet include gluing and nailing or clipping by means of such plastic clips.
The present invention is concerned with an improved pallet pack arrangement which can be constructed so that the pack is returnable for reuse.
According to the present invention there is provided a pallet and carton assembly in which the carton is generally square or rectangular and comprises four pillars located one at each corner of the square or rectangle and four side walls extending between the pillars, each pillar extending beyond the lower edge of the walls and the pallet being so configured that it defines spaces which can receive the extending parts of the pillars when the carton is located on the pallet.
Each pillar may be made of wood. The spaces may be defined by cut- 2 outs at each corner of the pallet. The pallet may be formed of wood.
The carton may be collapsible. A pair of opposite sides of the carton pallet; upon a pallet; may each have a central crease line which permits the carton to be folded to a collapsed condition.
The carton may include a base. The base may include parallel crease lines which allow the base to concertina when the carton is collapsed.
The carton may include a lid.
The walls of the carton may be formed from cardboard or plastics material.
The invention also provides a carton for use in the assembly and a pallet for use in the assembly.
A feature of the present design is that the carton, when located on the pallet effectively becomes an integral unit with the pallet by the location of the lower parts of each pillar within the cut-outs on the pallet.
The invention will be described now by way of example only, with particular reference to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an erected carton located upon a Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a collapsed carton mounted Figure 3 is a perspective view showing a collapsed carton and pallet in a returnable condition, and Figures 4 to 7 illustrate how a carton can be moved from its erected to collapsed condition.
Referring to Figure 1 a pallet pack assembly in accordance with the 1 3 present invention comprises a carton (10) and a pallet (11). The pallet (11) is a wooden construction which generally takes a conventional form, but it differs in one important respect in that each of the four corners is formed with a cutout portion (12) of generally square cross section.
The carton is of generally rectangular cross section and has four pillars (14, 15, 16, 17) located at the corners of the rectangle. The carton also has four side walls (18, 19, 20, 21) which are formed from a single sheet of cardboard or plastics material, the opposite ends of which are secured together by stitching or stapling as shown generally at (24). The sheet of cardboard or plastics material is secured to each pillar (14, 15, 16, 17) also by stitching or stapling as shown at (25).
Each opposite end wall of the carton has a centrally located crease line (28,29).
It will be seen that each pillar (14, 15, 16, 17) is of a length such that a lower part of the pillar projects beyond the lower edge of each wall (18, 19, 20, 21) of the carton. This enables the projecting portion of each pillar when the carton is mounted upon the pallet to locate in the space provided by each cut-out part (12) of the pallet. It will be noted that the cross- sectional shape of each projecting portion corresponds to the cross-sectional shape of each cut-out (12). In this way the carton and pallet fit together effectively as an integral unit which is very stable.
The carton also includes a base (30) which can be seen for example in Figure 4, this base being formed of the same material as the walls and being secured to a pair of opposite side walls of the carton by stitching or stapling.
The base has three longitudinally extending crease lines (31, 32, 33) which f extend along the length of the base.
4 The carton can also be provided with a rectangular lid which is shown for example in Figure 1 at (35).
The carton is collapsible as illustrated in Figures 4 to 7. In order to collapse the carton, the opposite end walls with the crease lines (28, 29) are pushed inwardly which brings together the other opposite side walls of the carton. At the same time the crease lines (31, 32, 33) in the base allow the base to concertina so that the carton can be moved to a completely collapsed condition and mounted on the pallet as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The lid can then be placed over the collapsed carton as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings to enable the pallet and carton combination to be returned to the customer.
Thus the present pallet assembly can be used by a customer and filled with appropriate goods in its fully erect position shown in Figure 1 and then transported with the goods in the carton to its destination. At that destination when the contents have been removed the carton can be collapsed as described above and laid flat on the pallet and the lid placed over the pallet as shown in Figure 3. The carton and pallet can then be returned for re-use.
A significant feature of the present design is the way in which the projecting portions of the pillars locate in the cut-outs at the corners of the pallet. The lower portion of the pillars thereby effectively become part of the pallet in this provides the carton-pallet assembly with extremely high stacking strength.

  1. Claims
    1. A pallet and carton assembly in which the carton is generally square or rectangular and comprises four pillars located one at each corner of the square 5 or rectangle and four side walls extending between the pillars, each pillar extending beyond the lower edge of the walls and the pallet being so configured that it defines spaces which can receive the extending parts of the pillars when the carton is located on the pallet.
    2. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein each pillar is made of wood.
    An assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the spaces are defined by cut-outs at each corner of the pallet.

A carton for use in the assembly according to claim 1, the carton being generally square or rectangular and comprising four pillars located one at each corner of the square or rectangle and four side walls extending between the pillars, each pillar extending beyond the lower edge of the walls, whereby, in use, the extending parts of the pillars can be received in the spaces of the pallet when the carton is located on the pallet.
    12. A carton according to claim 11, wherein each pillar is made of wood.
    13. A carton according to claim 11 or claim 12, wherein the carton is collapsible.
    7 14. A carton according to claim 13, wherein a pair of opposite sides of the carton each have a central crease line which permits the carton to be folded to a collapsed condition.
    15. A carton according to any one of claims 11 to 14 including a base.
    16. A carton according to claim 15, when appendant to claim 13 or claim 14, wherein the base includes prallel crease lines which allow the base to concertina when the carton is collapsed.

    18. A carton according to any one of claims 11 to 17, wherein the walls of the carton are formed from cardboard or plastics material.
    19. A pallet for use in the assembly of claim 1, wherein said pallet being generally square or rectangular and having at least each corner a cut-out so shaped and configured that it can receive a projecting part of a pillar of said carton.
    20. A pallet according to claim 19, wherein said pallet being constructed of wood.
    21. A pallet and carton assembly substantially as hereinbefore described 8 with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
