Abstract
The shoe 10 has an internal 27 and an external 20 means to prevent removal. The external means maybe a Velcro (RTM) strap 20, the internal means may be a backing strip 27 on the inside of the shoe. The backing strip may be made of rubber material and has a surface with a tacky finish. Parts of the shoe 22 are made of elasticated material which allows for the natural expansion of a dog's paw.
Description
2361167 PAW BOOT This invention relates to paw boots. A paw boot is simply
a covering like a shoe or a sock for the paw of an animal. Paw boots have a number of uses, for example, they can be used by police dogs when searching premises for intruders. Very often intruders enter premises by breaking windows and the paw boots protect the dogs paws from being cut by the broken glass. Sometimes a paw boot will be worn to act as a protection for medical dressings after the animal has been treated by a vet or they can be used simply to protect the animals paws from the cold and wet during inclement weather. Paw boots can also be used by sniffer dogs in the employ of the Fire Brigade and Customs people making investigations in arduous conditions of heat or cold. They could be used on larger animals and wild animals as well as domestic cats and dogs. A known problem is that very often the animal will attempt to remove the paw boot. External retaining means such as laces, studs, belts and Velcro attachments have all been used to prevent the removal of the paw boot from the paw of the animal.
According to the present invention there is provided a paw boot for an animal, the paw boot having internal as well as external means for preventing removal of the paw boot by an animal wearing the paw boot.
The invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the undernoted drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a paw boot in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a partial exploded plan view looking on arrow "A" of figure Figure 3 is a view of the underneath side of the paw boot of f igure 1 looking in the direction cf Arrow "B" Jin figure 1.
Figure 4 is a C-C of figure 2.
secticnal elevation looking on section 2.
From figure 1 the paw boot 10 is seen to comprise a substantially straight elongate tubular socket 11 tapering inwardly from a rear end 12 to a front end 13. That is to say, straight, as opposed to an angled foot and ankle portion. The front end 13 has a reinforcing web 14 fitted thereto forming a toe cap -15 which has a wavy outline 16. The paw boot 10 has a sole portion 17 best seen in f igure 3. The sole portion 17 is made of pure rubber, thermoplastic or other synthetic rubber material which replicates the friction grip of a dog's paw. This is advantageous because it provides the friction loading to which a dog is accustomed and helps prevent slipping and skidding. From figure 2 it is seen that the front portion 13 is of a truncated V shape. The truncated V shape extends rearwardly to a wider portion 18 and then narrows to a narrower portion 19 towards the rear end 12 of the paw boot 10. The truncated V shape is designed to follow the natural shape of the dog's paw and is in contrast to the rounded toe portions of other paw boots. A retaining or tightening strap 20, fastened by Velcro ^ strips is used to secure the paw boot to the animal's paw thereby forming an external means for preventing removal of the paw boot by the animal. The retaining or tightening strap 20 is detachably attached to a Velcro strip 21 fixed to the underside of the paw boot whereby retaining strap 20 is movable longitudinally as indicated by the arrows shown in figure 3. The advantage of this is the retaining or tightening strap 20 can be shifted lengthwise along the paw boot to locate the best^postion on the dog's paw around which to tighten strap 20. Velcro A strip 21 is sufficiently long to accommodate the use of two tightening straps 20 which can be necessary in the case of working dogs. An upper portion 22 of the paw boot is joined to a lower portion 23 as by stitching along stitch line 24. Upper portion 22 is made of an elasticated waterproof 3.
material. Preferably this is Neoprene sandwiched between knitted Nylon layers. The elasticated material allows the dog's paw to expand and contract naturally when the dog is running or walking whilst an advantage of the straight tapering shape as best seen in f igure 1 is that it allows the paw boot to be easily pulled on and off and being of elasticated material the paw boot will in time take on the natural shape of the dog's paw. The wavy line 16 best seen in figure 2 also assists in accommodating the natural expansion of the dog's paw. The lower portion 23 and the reinforcing web 14 is made of "Cardura'W'.t ype waterproof textured Nylon made by the Du Pont company. This is a hard wearing material offering the dog's paw good protection and is used in thicknesses of either 500 or 1000 denier. An important part of the present invention is best explained with reference to figure 2. Figure 2 is a plan view of the paw boot 10 looking on arrow A in f igure 1. Part of the top portion 22 has been cut away along lines 25, 26 to provide a part exploded view of the paw boot. The cut away portion reveals a backing strip 27, seen also in section in figure 4, attached to lower portion 23, for example, by stitching. It has been found that backing strip 27 helps to prevent the removal of the paw boot by the animal. Located an the inside of the paw boot, as it is, backing strip 27 forms an internal means of preventing removal of the paw boot by the animal. The backing strip is made of a rubber material. Preferably the material is a shot blast rubber having a Shore hardness of 60 on the A scale heavily loaded with release agent. This provides the rubber material with a tacky finish which considerably assists in preventing removal of the paw boot. This material can be obtained from the Rubberfast Co 1.td, Fenton ITnd Estate, Dewsbury, Stoke-on-Trent. Typical dimensions for the backing strip 27 are 30 to 8Omm in length by approx 20mm wide by up to Smm thick. Preferably the thickness would be between 1.5 and 2,mm. A thickness of this order will prevent over tightening of the retaining strap 20 causing irritation or damage to the superfricia-11 digital flexor tendon.
