Abstract

An indicating device is claimed comprising a substrate bearing information over which is printed a water soluble ink. Preferably the water soluble ink comprises a water soluble salt of a carboxylated acrylic polymer. More preferably the ink is printed by a flexographic or silk screen process. The indicating device may used as a lottery ticket, a label having a promotional aspect or for showing that an object has become wet. Alternatively claimed is a water soluble ink comprising a water soluble salt of a carboxylated acrylic copolymer.

Description

1 1 2361008 1 AN INDICATING DEVICE The present invention relates to an
indicating device bearing initially hidden information which can be revealed by subjecting the device to predetermined conditions. The device may be a game mechanic such as a lottery ticket or product container or label having a promotional aspect.
Game mechanics are used to promote products by introducing a game element into a promotion linked to the everyday use of the product. In a typical example, a game mechanic is placed against a cold drink container or placed with the container in a refrigerator. Using thermochromic ink which changes in colour or opacity below a predetermined temperature, a ""win" or ""lose" message appears.
Another example is a lottery ticket with one or more opaque silver scratch-off panels, beneath which prize information has previously been printed.
Water soluble ink systems are known, and have been used to create water slide transfers and to coat items and protect them from graffiti, oil spillage and degradation caused by road transport and everyday use. In the latter case a special surfactant or pH adjustment system has been required to destabilise and remove the protective coating.
2 The present invention provides an indicating device comprising a substrate bearing information over which is printed a water soluble ink.
Preferably, the ink comprises a water soluble salt of a carboxylated acrylic polymer. Such an ink can be coloured and printed with standard printing equipment in, for example, a flexographic or silk screen process. The ink is scuff resistant and cannot easily be removed by normal print processing such as die-cutting, guillotining, stacking and packing, or by rubbing in the absence of water. However, by applying a small amount of water and gently rubbing with a fingertip, the water soluble ink can be removed to reveal the previously printed information. No adjustment of pH or addition of surfactant is required to promote the solubility of the ink.
The present invention also provides a water soluble ink comprising a water soluble salt of a carboxylated acrylic copolymer. Suitable carboxylated acrylic polymers include SP8. a hydroxylated acrylic copolymer; Glasalt S26, an aqueous emulsion of an acrylic polymer; Surcal 836 carboxylated polymer; Glascol C38, a n anionic acrylic solution polymer and Clascol LE15, a carboxylated acrylic copolymer (all available from Ciba Specialty Chemicals).
The present invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
3 Figure 1 schematically shows a side profile of a device according to an embodiment of the invention; and Figure 2 shows a f ront view of the device shown in Figure 1.
As shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 a suitable substrate A such as (preferably laminated) card or plastic or other object can be pre-printed with text, shapes or symbols B describing prizes which can be won through a specific promotion.
The pre-printed text, shapes or symbols B can be overprinted using conventional coating methods e.g. flexographic or silk screen printing, with water soluble ink C to hide the text or symbols B. If necessary the game mechanic can then be cut into shape.
The water soluble ink C is easily removed by applying a small amount of water to the ink and gently rubbing with a finger tip to reveal the pre-printed text or symbols B. In an alternative embodiment, the indicating device provides a means for indicating that anobject has been wetted.
