Abstract

A sterilisation wrapping which provides a microbiological barrier and has high strength and drape properties has a hydrophilic layer bonded on one side of the wrapping. This hydrophilic layer facilitates the spread of condensed steam during the autoclave process so that the packs being sterilised remain dry. The wrapping is preferably colour coded so that the hydrophilic layer can be distinguished from the other outer surface, and the wrapping is arranged to that the hydrophilic layer lies adjacent a sterilisation tray or basket.

Description

Sterilisation Wrap / Drape- Material This invention relates to a porous autoclavable Sterilisation Wrap which not only conforms to the essential requirements of EN868 parts 1 ( notably requirements relating to strength, drape, sterilisability and microbiological barrier properties ) but which will also accelerate the evaporisation of unwanted condensed steam which causes the phenomenon of wet packs. The wrapping of surgical instrument trays with a suitable membrane, providing strength, drape and barrier properties, is an essential requirement in the preparation and presentation of surgical instruments in the operating theatre. The requirements of international standards provide for a product which will have specified drape properties, strength and resistance to the ingress of bacteria both wet and dry , while at the same time allowing the autoclaving process of saturated steam penetration , to proceed.
Given these restrictions, it is extremely difficult to always ensure that the autoclave process is successful, particularly with instrument sets containing large amounts of heavy metal which, In the early stages of the autoclaving process will encourage the precipitation of condensed steam . Under certain conditions this water will not flash off during the process , resulting in a wet pack which is then unsuitable for use.
This wet pack problem is helped by the use of inner linen wraps, the interleaving of absorbent materials between wrap layers and/or the use of absorbent materials under and within the sterilisation tray or basket. These absorbent materials spread the wetness over a wide area allowing for water droplets to be drawn through the wrap material or to be flashed off due to contact with a wider area of increasing heat by contact with the metal contents.
A product which encourages the spread of condensed steam, particularly close to the metal tray or basket, while still providing strength, microbiological barrier and drape properties would be an obvious advantage This invention relates to the bonding of plies of materials of dissimilar surface energies by any method which will not impede the autoclave process , to form a wrap/ drape product providing strength, drape and barrier properties but which is also absorbent on one surface. The various properties of strength, barrier , drape and water absorption may be achieved in different layers.
By producing one outer surface with hydrophilic properties and the other surface of a different colour, a colour coding will be obtained which will assist in the wrapping process and be acceptable in the operating theatre .
