Abstract

A baby's vest incorporates a water-impermeable panel 10 in its front, to prevent saliva dribbled by the baby from wetting the baby's chest and so reducing the frequency with which it is necessary to change the baby's clothing. The water-impermeable panel 10 may be secured over the front surface of the front of the vest or form a middle layer of a three-layer front panel.

Description

2359977 Baby's Vest The present invention relates to a vest for a baby or
young infant.
Babies have a tendency to dribble a great deal, particularly when teething. An effect of this is that, over a period of time, the baby's clothing becomes wetted, at least over the chest region: the dribbled saliva etc. soaks through the baby's clothing, including his or her vest, so that the baby's chest becomes wetted. It is therefore necessary to change the baby's clothing quite often, including the baby's vest.
We have now devised a baby's vest which alleviates the above problem and reduces the frequency with which it is necessary to change the baby's clothing.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a baby, s vest the front of which incorporates a waterimpermeable panel.
Preferably the water-impermeable panel extends downwardly from the neck of the vest. The water-impermeable panel may extend across the full width of the front of the vest, or it may be limited in width to a centre region of the front of the vest. The water- impermeable panel may terminate short of the bottom of the vest, so as to cover only the baby's chest region, but preferably it extends over the full length of the front of the vest. The water- impermeable panel may be arranged to overlie the front surface of the front of the vest. Alternatively, the front of the vest may comprise three layers, namely inner and outer fabric layers and the water impermeable panel positioned between them. 30 For comfort, the vest itself is preferably formed of conventional fabric material, which is water-permeable. However, it will be appreciated that the waterimpermeable panel prevents moisture permeating through the front of the vest and wetting the baby's chest.
2 Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of a first embodiment of vest 5 in accordance with the present invention; and FIGURE 2 is a front view of a second embodiment of vest of accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a baby's vest formed of front and back panels of water- permeable fabric which are stitched together down opposite side seams and across the two shoulders: in a modification, the front and back panels may be left separate along one of the shoulders, and provided with e.g. 3 buttons to attach them together. The lower ends of the front and back panels are formed with shaped sections 12,14 to cover the baby's abdomen and bottom, and which are provided with poppertype fasteners e.g. 15 to enable the ends of these sections to be fastened together between the baby's legs, over the baby's nappy or diaper. As described, the vest is of conventional form: 20 however, in accordance with the present invention, the front panel 10 of the vest is provided with a panel 16 of waterimpermeable material, e.g. PVC sheeting. In the example shown, the water- impermeable panel 16 extends from the neck down to approximately the waist region, and is limited to the centre region of the panel 10 of the vest: preferably, however the water- impermeable panel instead extends across the full width of the vest, between the opposite side seams, and over the full length of the front panel 10.
is The water- impermeable panel 16 forms an integral part of the front of the vest. It may be secured in position, e.g. by stitching, to overlie the outer surface of the front panel 10 of the vest. Alternatively, the front panel 10 of the vest may include three layers, namely inner and outer fabric layers and the water- impermeable panel 16 positioned between them.
Figure 1 shows a sleeveless vest but the invention is 3 also applicable to a vest having sleeves, as shown in Figure 2. In the vest of Figure 2, it will be noted that the waterimpermeable panel 16 extends across the full width of the front panel 10 of the vest, between the two side seams: however, the water- impermeable panel 16 may be limited to the centre region, as indicated by the dotted lines 16a. Again, the waterimpermeable panel preferably extends over the full length of the front panel 10 of the rest. Also, the water impermeable panel forms an integral part of the vest: it may be secured in position to overlie the outer surface of the front panel 10, or incorporated as the middle layer of a three-layer front panel.
It will be appreciated that, in use of the vests which have been described, the water- impermeable panel 16 provides protection against the baby's chest becoming wetted from his or her dribbling, and so avoids the need for changing the baby, s vest so often. Particularly where the water- impermeable panel overlies the outer surface of the front of the vest, the baby may wear the vest around the home, without any garment over it, and the water- impermeable panel can be simply wiped dry from timeto-time.
